Default A little more Shag / T206 origin

The Shag Shaughnessy thread got me inspired...I picked this composite up at least 25 years ago...you will see both the Shaughnessy and Ryan T206s are taken from these shots. This composit is probably about 20 inches tall by 24 inches wide with each of the photos being individual 3 x 5s and sort of a "metallic" sheen to the shots...

I have always liked this piece. It has a lot of "T206s that never were."

The composite reads (white paint, hand written) Roanoke Base-ball team, champions Virginia League 1910, Photo copyright Kidd 1909.

The players pictured are:
Robertson
Andrada
Reynolds
Touchstone
Doane
Schmidt
Painter
Doyle
Pressley
Newton
Ryan
Heins (secretary, became one of the richest men in Western Virginia...hated his business partner...he would work mornings and leave at noon and this partner would work afternoons)
Holland
Shaugnessy / Mgr
Powell
Williams / President

Awesome piece, and thanks for showing it off! Many of these Roanoke players appear in the T209 II set, but they're all depicted out-doors rather than in studio-portrait format.

I've always been amazed at how many cards the Southern Leaguers had printed during the 1909-12 era. Not just tobacco cards either. Of all the semi-pro or minor league players to print next to the big league stars, why the Southern League?

Major League baseball was basically confined to the Northeast. The Southern League was basically the highest form of baseball for the area - just like the California League and the Pacific Coast League was for the West. Obviously, the local fans warranted their share of cards and collectibles.

Default More Southern Leaguers - Columbia

Here is a shot of Kiernan & Manion from their time in Columbia. I don't know T 206s very well. Did anyone else from this composite end up on a T206?
