Default PSA, SGC, GAI card graders...so what are thier qualifications?

Posted By: Dave

Hardly need to mention the fact that these guys make desicions of the utmost significance dollar wise with many collectors collections. A couple graders can seemingly make a card worth $400 or worth $5,000. In light of that I'm curious if anyone has ever talked with any of the head haunchos with either of the grading companies about this. Exactly what qualifications do these graders have? Are they sent to grading school? Are they "watched" over the first 90 days on the job? Do the grading companies keep track of who grades what, and take issue when graders miss something or when a card needs to be bought back? And just how much money does the "average" grader make a year?

Obviously, they all go through a training program, but they also learn along the way. I would hope excellent eyesight is at least one of the qualifications (which rules me out).

To grade based upon the amount of business the customer does with them?

Besides reading some books on printing I would imagine most graders learn by on the job experience. The more you handle something the better you know it....no different than us collectors in that regard except they handle far more than most of us..This is another reason I have a preference for my grading company of choice...I know the graders, know they have each graded 10's of thousands of vintage cards, and respect their opinions....best regards
