Default tinker to evers to chance question...

Posted By: anthony

I was wondering if this trio completed the first ever recorded double play in baseball or was it just that the poem was written about the double play that made it famous?

if not the first recorded double play, was there one and by who?

most definitely not the first. it's just a pretty awful poem that somehow took off during the cubs and giants rivalry in the first decade of the 20th century.

...began playing Major League Baseball in 1902. Of course there were two outs recorded on one play, or a double play, well in advance of that date.
Your follow-up question is harder to answer. The first double play may very well have taken place in the first ever baseball game. But trying to determine the exact date of that is a chicken/egg game.

T206- the chicken and egg question is figured out...'twas the chicken that came first...which was in the egg....this definition (below) applies to archeology but it applies to other fields too.....

"Baseball's Sad Lexicon"

Franklin P. Adams

These are the saddest of possible words,
Tinker-to-Evers-to-Chance.
Trio of Bear Cubs fleeter than birds,
Tinker-to-Evers-to-Chance.
Ruthlessly pricking our gonfalon bubble,
Making a Giant hit into a double,
Words that are weighty with nothing but trouble.
Tinker-to-Evers-to-Chance.

What a GREAT poem !!!!!

I find myself mumbling it to myself quite often. It made them immortal and got Tinker into the HOF (but that's another thread).

If nothing else, it makes people look up the word "gonfalon."

Funny, in a way, usually (historically and statistically), the team with the highest amount of double plays is usually the worst team (more opposing batters reaching first).

........... and, as far as "chicken/egg" OT: I always thought it was based on Evolution (egg) vs. Creationism (chicken), but that's just me .......

i didnt think it was the first double play ever but maybe by chance the first recorded...i just happen to be looking up the first unassisted triple play and that was easier to find... apparently, its a pretty rare feat but if i remember correctly, they were all either short-stops or 2nd basemen.

An outfielder did it in the PCL, years ago... I'll post the info and a scan of one of his cards, if someone posts his name.

i'm correcting myself, there were a couple of first basemen that did it as well.

the first mentioned triple play was by an outfielder but that play was being disputed since the rules have changed since then. center or left fielder caught a line drive and the runner on 2nd and 3rd attempted to score, the outfielder stepped on 3rd and got both guys out (since both past 3rd base) then threw it to 2nd to make sure of the out.

i heard this years ago but just read it about it last week, i didnt have all the details so i'm hoping the internet is correct
