Default King of Collectibles?

I just got an email from Goldin Auctions entitled "King of Collectibles Invites You to Bid". LOL, did I miss a coronation?

Ken has called himself that for quite some time, I believe.

Could be a reference to Richard's ruthlessness.

Some Shakespearean scholars claim the original line in his first draft was actually, "My kingdom for a T206 common!!"

I like Ken (hi Ken) and we talk sometimes, but I get this flashback of the King before him.

In the play, through trickery and depravity while posing as a devout and modest man, Richard makes himself King illegitimately. As part of the saga he has his nephew, the rightful king, murdered in the tower where a King was traditionally to stay before his coronation. Richard's reign is short, and he dies ingloriously, deserted by many of his followers on the field, begging for a horse.

And hate the idle pleasures of these days.
Plots I have laid, inductions dangerous,
By drunken prophecies, libels and dreams

I presume the literary illusion was to the dubious ethics and doubtful legitimacy of the self-proclaimed king's.

Greg, spot on, if a bit over-the-top analogy by me. A couple of unpleasant incidents made me draw the comparison.

Richard III was also a hunchback, but I make no inferences by that fact. Just for the record.

As immortalized in the opening lines.

But I, that am not shaped for sportive tricks,
Nor made to court an amorous looking-glass;
I, that am rudely stamp’d, and want love’s majesty

Ha, and they said reading dead poets and playwrights wouldn't do anything for me! I must say I find Shakespeare to be a more insightful writer than whoever wrote the poetry of Ken Goldin

Ken has always been a very good promoter and it has served him well. Not my cup of tea but you can't knock his results. Props for selling his business at the top of the market.

25.5 million people have watched the show on Netflix . It’s been renewed for season 2 , which comes out shortly. Will be running for many years as it’s a profitable show for Netflix.
(as a quick hint, less of the ‘who cares’ stuff like beanie babies in season 2, more hardcore sports collectibles.)
From a goldin standpoint , over half of our registered bidders have registered with goldin AFTER April 28,2023, or meaning 11 months of Netflix has brought in more viewers than all the work I put in marketing goldin auctions from 2012-2023 (and I am an extensive marketer).
So when the marketing team sends out that email with the catchy title, they are appealing to the watchers of the show, as well as the people who may not watch but are aware.
I hope it amuses some of you, and annoys as few of you as possible.
Thanks
Ken

I thought the show was fun enough to watch. Netflix has dabbled in the collectibles reality show realm a few times and I've liked what they've done. They did another show Slobby's World that was about this flea market hustler personality who was really into Starter jackets and stuff like that. And they had another show called Swap Shop that was sort of like Storage Wars but with flea markets and garage sales.

Is that why you guys had to increase your BP to 22% to help cover the cost of doubling the number of registered bidders on the site? Seems reasonable. I hope more auction houses follow your lead.

I just watched the first two episodes while on a train home from
NYC. A few observations:

1. It’s impressive what Ken has built. Congrats.
2. I think the show is a bit misleading bc it does not talk about or explain buyers premiums. You have shots of an “appraisal” at $500k and then it says “possible commission” of $100k, which implies the total cost is $600k, or that the consignor gets $500k and Goldin gets $100k. At the least, it does not show that the hammer and the final price are different, giving the impression the consignor gets the whole amount, which they almost never do. I am watching the episode where the guy with the Steph Curry rookie passed on a $150k cash offer to grade and consign to Goldin. As the second episode ends, it’s unclear whether the card will get the consignor enough and we (do far) are not told whether the current cost/bid includes the BP. Same thing with the Jackie jersey - was the hammer $7.2mm, so $8.65mm with BP, or was the hammer $6mm and $7.2mm with BP? I think it would be better to show, at least in one episode, how an auction actually works.
3. I find it interesting, and frankly refreshing, that the Goldin submitted Curry got a PSA 8. I don’t know if PSA owned Goldin at the time, but if so, that result implies there seems to be a clear separation between the two.

I think it’s a fun show to watch.

Ken, I would love if you got into entertainment memorabilia and other Americana. I think you would be especially successful and competitive with others if you kept the BP to 20%, not the 25% that AHs often charge on this stuff (RR, Heritage Sothebys).
