Finally, I got to start off my tobacco collection. Two T-206 Kid Elberfelds (both are the Washington/portrait variation) arrived today. Okay, so they are not in the best of condition (VG and Fair) and I don't have such an exstensive collection as most of you here, but it's a start and I'm happy with them! Just wanted to share. Thanx for taking the time to read.

Thanx. And funny story behind how I came about my collecting choices...

In short, it had to do with browsing this forum, reading "Mr.Mint's Guide to Investing in Baseball Cards and Collectibles", and watching "Raiders Of The Lost Ark" followed by "Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade" - all at the same time.

Some quotes that struck me:

"We are merely passing through history... This... This IS history."
"I hear you are an obtainer of rare antiquities."



Plus the fact that I'm tired of collecting speculative garbage.

I read his book years ago. Mint condition t-cards a good inventment?

O/T: I lost huge on all those mint condition 1986-1987 sets I bought from him and stored away. Just kidding. I was in graduate school selling my cards on eBay, so I could pay my rent and eat. And travel. And buy research materials.

Certainly I agree that "mint condition" antique cards are a good investment, but I also believe that VG to EX cards are a better investment. When you consider the amount you need to shell out currently for a Mint or better example of an antique card, I think overtime you'll do better settling for a presentable collector's grade.

For example T206 common in 8 or better $800 on up
t206 Cobb red background in 3 $800-1200

My money is better spent on the Cobb.

congrats on your start - nice old mill back by the way. I also agree with Darren - I'd rather have a HOFer graded a 3-5 than a mint condition common. While it would be nice to have a mint conditioned HOFer, not many can afford that. Ive already noticed nice appreciation on many of the HOFer t206's that Ive bought in the last year (though I currently have no intention of selling them).

I am solely a collector. I personally consider pre-war cards - especially
tobacco cards - a 'work of art.' Creases just add character, but I do abhor
paper loss and missing pieces.
