Default 1915 Susini Cuban Baseball Cards

Posted By: David Hanvey

Does anybody know how this issue date came about ? I've seem them noted as being released somewhere between 1910 and 1920 and I have seen grading companies list them as 1915.

Has anyone nailed down a date for these ? I have my doubts with the release date given by grading companies as 1915, mainly due to the boxer's portrayed in the set.

I dont think anyone really has found an exact date. I use 1915 but also note that they might be anywhere between 1910-1920.

What year would the boxers point towards?

Is there an album for the set? Perhaps this is how the date is known. Otherwise, the dates on old sets are occasionally changed as more info is known. Having seen the baseball cards, there is nothing in the images that pinpoints them to the year 1915.

Here are the 3 baseball related cards (below), #201, #202, #203.

There is no way to tell the exact year by the baseball players. The best way would be to look at the other 1250 nonsport cards in the whole set. The cards are listed in the ACC (American Card Catalog) under N230 (page 75 in my book) and then broken down into subsets.
N230-1 is cards #1-#100 Celebrities
N230-2 is #101-#200 Means of Transport
N230-3 is #201-#250 Sports (baseball and boxing are in this group)
N230-4 is #251-#300 Dances
N230-5 is #301-#800 Pecularities of World
N230-6 #801-#1300 The War in Europe.

The key to the 1915 date might be the last subset (War in Europe), WWI was from 1914-18.

To maybe get a closer date the Celebrities subset might talk about a play or silent movie and an average year might be pinpointed more closely.

But maybe all of the 1300 cards werent released the same time????

Im sure if someone had a large number of the 1300 different cards and used the Internet they would be more able to pinpoint the exact year through research. But the cards are fairly scarce overall.

Any Cuban Nonsport collectors out there have a larger group of these cards???

The two boxers in the set are Jack Johnson and Billy Wells, who were meant to fight in 1911, but the fight was cancelled.

Johnson was the Heavyweight champion and an obvious inclusion within any boxing set of the day. Wells however wasn't a huge star. Wells never fought in Cuba, and didn't fight much outside of his home country of England. The nearest he ever got to Cuba was when he fought in the US 1912/13

In 1915 Johnson fought Willard in Cuba. If these cards were released in 1915, why then wouldn't you portray Johnson and Willard on the cards. It was a huge fight for it's day.

Only due to the former reason, i think these cards were issued prior to 1915, but I wasn't sure if a baseball expert has come up with another theory.

I have wondered about the date as well. My assumption was that due to the vast number of cards that they released over a period of time. The equipment in the photo below is consistent with 1915 but by no means is sufficient to pinpoint the issue to that year. This photo was also used on a couple of other foriegn issues depicting "American Football" including Churchman's from the late 20's and Edward, Ringer, & Bigg from the mid-30's.

I have always thought that Speaker was wearing the jersey from the 1913-1914 World Tour meaning that the set was produced no earlier than 1914.
