Default 1969 MLBPA Pin's

Hello, I'm new to the 1969 MLBA Pin set and was wondering if there's a difference in the Red and Blue pins. Is one tougher then the other as far as print run? I've noticed some players have both red and blue.

Thanks for your help

Hi Bobby!

If you are referring to the 7/8" pins, I am somewhat familiar with them - just wanted to warn you that there were a batch of pins printed in the same style around 1983 that contains many stars that were not in the original set. From what I understand, the 1983 version does include a copyright 1969 date, but does not include the "Winona, Minn" reference on the printing on the side of the pin.

The original 1969 pins had 30 AL players with a red background, and 30 NL players with a blue background. I always enjoyed this set - they were originally issued in gumball machines. Somewhere I have a set with the original gum ball header card. Somewhere!

Happy collecting!

Marty

Thanks for the info Marty,

I unfortunately now know my Musial pin that I thought was from 69 is actually from 83. Oh well.....

Sorry, Matt! The 1969 set only included players active that year, so Musial was not included. I really don't know why someone made the 1983 pins, but they must have made them in a large quantity as they are pretty readily available. I think the 1983 pins keep the value of the original 1969 pins down to some extent, even though they are pretty easy to distinguish and have a fairly small intersection of players.

Marty,

Thanks for the info. I just recently picked up a Clemente, Aaron and Kaline, but they do not say the Winona MINN on the pin. I must have reprints from 1983. Still great looking set. I would love to see that header.

Hi Bobby!

A very nice set - even the 1983 pins are neat, despite the murky origins!

I did find my set and my header card - a bit of a miracle that it was actually in one of the first places I looked!

Other than Mays, Aaron, Clemente and Rose, I think the 69 set could be put together pretty reasonably, especially considering it is a 43 year old set.
