That you own, they can be from any set as long as the player pictured is identified as a minor leaguer or in minor league uniform.

Here are a few post-war Oakland Oaks. Most collectors here will recognize the first three (two HOFers and another guy who should be in). Wilson hit .400 in the Negro Leagues, just a few years after Ted Willimas became the "last man" to hit that high in 1941 ...

With Bruce's first post.

Not to say that there's anything wrong with his second.

It is my understanding that there are about 120 Western Playground cards known in total....which would include the set of 40 that I used to own....regards

If I had to pick just one, it'd probably be Ten Million's T212. Since that's already been posted, though, I'll go with what is probably number two.

A Canadian issue featuring a Canadian-born player on a Canadian-based team:

Regards,

Richard.

FKW,

Some interesting Rifleman trivia: when he played for the Celtics in 1946 he became the first player to break a glass backboard. He didn't make a thunderous dunk ala Darryl Dawkins he just took a set shot and the backboard, which was faulty, shattered.

He was also drafted by the Chicago Bears

Paul Strand 1923 versus Lazzeri 1925 (both with Salt Lake City)

Batting average = .394 -- .355
games = 194 -- 197
At bats = 825 -- 710
Hits = 325 -- 252
Doubles = 66 -- 52
Triples = 13 -- 14
Home runs = 43 -- 60
RBI = 187 -- 222
Runs = 180 -- 202

These two seasons account for still standing professional records in hits, RBI, and runs

Must have been the salty air? Thanks for the info Brian - got any good links to Strand's outstanding season? I know there were some big numbers put up in the West Texas New Mexico League in the 1930's but those numbers are just ridiculous.

Here is something I wrote previously on Strand with some links:

Paul Strand holds the record for most hits in a single season in professional baseball with 325. He racked up back-to-back seasons with .384 in 1922 and .394 in 1923. The .384 came off of 752 at-bats in 178 games and the .394 season came from 825 at-bats in 194 games. His 325 hits came in 1923 when he had 187 RBI. And he pitched at least one perfect game in the minors. He is in the PCL HOF http://www.minorleaguenews.com/baseball/affiliated/aaa/pcl/features/articles2004/041404.10.html

He won a World Series w/ the Miracle Braves in 1914. He received the highest signing bonus ever (at the time) for a pitcher in the early 1910s AND the highest signing bonus ever (at the time) for a hitter in 1924. His MLB stats are here http://baseball-reference.com/s/stranpa01.shtml

Here is a Bill James tidbit about Strand: http://books.google.com/books?id=mUzTJ4-8N0EC&pg=RA2-PA143&lpg=RA2-PA143&dq=%22paul+strand%22+salt+lake+%22bill+james%22&source=web&ots=UEhl4WjgNB&sig=-Atfh18d_fyR-dKw4AbF27E1kjs&hl=en#PRA1-PA143,M1

I own the autographed paper but not the ball...
