Thirty-two active-duty soldiers who are fans of an NFL team will appear on trading cards that can be found in packs of Topps football cards scheduled for release later this year.

The Topps Armed Forces Fans of the Game insert cards will highlight one soldier from each NFL team's city. The card for the New York Giants' fan, Col. Marc C. Hendler, is at right.

Also included in the product will be NFL Honor Roll cards, which will highlight 15 retired NFL players who served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam.

It will include cards of Roger Staubach, Marv Levy, Chuck Bednarik, Johnny "Blood" McNally, Sid Luckman, Gino Marchetti, Marion Motley, Lou Creekmur, Art Donovan, Joe Perry, Tom Fears, Rocky Bleier, Otto Graham, Lou Groza and Norm Van Brocklin.

While I like the idea of honoring former players who served in uniform (and I liked the military-worn uniform swatch cards (BB) UD did a few years ago, I find the notion of Topps pandering to the masses on the backs of currently serving troops to be inappropriate for a sportscard issue.

For the record, I also disliked Topps' idea of putting cards of actors, presidents, etc., into sets and inserts.
