Default Help with 1967 and 1968 Attuck Brooks State Champions Awards (Dave Winfield)

I am looking for some assistance in valuing these two items. A close friend of mine brought them to me today. They belonged to his wife’s uncle John Perkins. Her uncle was one of the coaches for the 1967 and 1968 Attuck Brooks American Legion State Champions from Minnesota. Dave Winfield and his brother were both members of those teams. He was 16 in the first photo. Each member of the team was awarded with these. The 5X7 photos are in mint condition and the folders themselves are in excellent to mint condition. However the 1968 folder does have a minor indention on the front. His wife is looking to sell these and asked me to assist her. I have no expertise when it comes to assessing value to such items. I told him that an auction house like RMY might be her best option. Nonetheless, I would like to get some feedback from a few of the photo guys here regarding their potential value. Thanks in advance for your time and assistance.

Mike -

Those are so cool. I have moved my collecting focus mainly to early individual cards and photos of HOFers (no more team/multi-player items) so this is no longer in my wheelhouse, but I’d have paid up to $250 for each. Honestly, I think they’d sell for about $100 each with me out of the game (maybe less). But you never know if there are two die-hard Winfield collectors looking at the same auction or if there is anyone else out there that was as crazy as me trying to pick these sorts of things up.

Best of luck and thanks for sharing. I now have to add this to the earliest HOF checklist. I have one photo of Winfield with the Minnesota Golden Gophers. I certainly didn’t know about these!

Thanks Derek appreciate you taking ghe time to respond. I have to admit I'm tempted to buy one. I just want to ensure that my friend maximizes their value.

My friend discovered that his family also has the jacket for the 1967 team. Could anyone hazard a guess to the possible value it may carry?

Default Hi Mike!

I would think that the "value" of these items would be very speculative - On the right day with the right eyes on them.......well, you know how collectors can get when they see something they want! Other than that venturing an educated guess (with admittedly no expertise in these types of items) - I would think $150-$250 each on the photos - the jacket (as it wasn't Winfiield's) based more on the quality of the Jacket than it's 3rd party association. Certainly the place to go to find out for sure would be an auction. You could recommend she send 1 photo to auction and tell her you will give her whatever the auctioned photo sells for the other (saving you both the auction fees on that one).

Thanks Howard, I told her it was probably had more sentimental value than anything else. However I also told her I would ask. Nonetheless it is a very pretty coat.

I just wanted to chime in, but take it for what it’s worth which is nothing. I live in Mpls area and have a huge Minnesota related sports memorabilia collection including Millers, Saints, Gophers, and high school from all sports including baseball. I should also add that Winfield is one of my favorite all time players as a kid as well as being a St Paul kid and Gopher. I have many items like this relating to all sports. With all that being said, these items don’t do much for me. I think they’re cool and all, but it’s just not striking my fancy. I wish you the best in your sale of the group for her and hope I am completely wrong and you get big money.

Very, very cool. I've got my own little collection of pre-big league photos of various athletes, and Winfield was also one of my all-time favorites during my childhood.

I'd probably pay like $125 bucks for one of the Legion photo folders, but an auction house like RMY would probably be the best option to gauge actual value.

Good luck.

I would consign it, including the jacket, as a group lot with one of the big auctions. Unique collection, and counts both as photography and memorabilia.

Pre-rookie to be sure.
