Default Heritage T206 Auction - WOW

I cannot get over the prices last night. Yes, it was a truly amazing offering filled with incredible cards, and maybe it was people getting their last licks in before state taxes start applying to Heritage purchases, but I am amazed at the prices achieved in last night’s auction.

I came into the night wanting to own the PSA 8, Tris Speaker. I was willing to pay in the low $30k for it, with the last one having traded in 2015 for $24k; I figured I would “be aggressive” and pay 30%(ish) over the last sale. It closed at $66k with Buyers Premium. Almost 3x the last (and highest) published sale.

So I then I decide I will take down portraits of Tinker, Evers, and Chance, and I would pay around $15k for each, which is a very very healthy price for the cards. I eventually bowed out of Evers (I pity the sucker who paid $18k for that overgraded OC example) and the Red Chance (very pretty) after they exceeded $16.5k - they both sold for $18k. My lone purchase of the night was this Tinker Portrait, which I think was a relative steal given prices.

I know numerous people who were bidding and very motivated, most of whom walked little or nothing because of the prices.

What are your thoughts on the auction prices, the state of the market, and show us your Heritage pick ups (and tell us what bank you robbed to buy it/them).

Those prices are crazy. I will stick with my Ex/Ex-Mt cards. Those are nice enough for me. This auction again proves that the t206 set is the set to have.

Amazing set, incredible prices. I'm just happy to keep the catalog

Does anyone know the total auction price realized for the collection?

Default total sales?

anyone know what the total of all 520 cards was? I tried for a common PSA 9 but it sold for $14k and that was too much for me.

There were a couple commons I really wanted as well as the pink chase which all got out of control

Amazing prices and great for the hobby/set IMO. I wish I had won just one though! ha!

Congrats Ryan! That Tinker is gorgeous, and I think you got a really good deal.

I think what surprised me most about this auction was the amount of bidding that took place at the end. Most of the big cards doubled in price after I went to bed. I thought that since prices seemed high, that it would be a relatively quiet ending.

I was surprised the WaJo Portrait went for less than the WaJo Hands at his chest... maybe the Hands at his chest is the next hot card and not the portrait

Anything I was somewhat interested became way above my budget.

Congrats Ryan on that pickup!! That Tinker Port is a beauty!!!

...and SGC has been posting like mad on Facebook about how "SGC CARDS OUT PERFORM (sic) ALL THE REST!"
Wonder how they'll spin this one. I even disproved one of their "highest ever sales" using the PSA website. They're basically fixating on cards with no recent sales history even though the overall market for high-grade T206 and vintage cards have doubled over the past couple of years.

Even lousy overgraded PSA cards are setting all-time records. As that famous politician might have said, "It's the Set Registry, stupid!"

It was one of those auctions where the cards were so far out of my stratosphere that I didn't even pay attention. It was definitely an auction for those with lots of disposable income.

All seems well in the hobby. Congrats to the consignor who has to be pleased with the finally tally. Hope everyone is happy with their purchases.

Same. Of course that doesn't mean I wouldn't like to own some of those cards.

Does Heritage track the number of individual bidders who participate in an auction and share that information publicly? That would be interesting on this auction.

I wonder how much correlation there is between the mind-numbing numbers generated by this splendid collection and the Dow Jones hitting an all time high- both on the same day. Just a tad, me thinks

It was a perfect confluence of events: the most popular set ever, offered in the highest condition ever, marketed individually by the top auction house, during the strongest stock market ever, with an incredible concentration of wealth at the top.

Put that all together and what do you get? An $8 million T-206 set. And the fact that so many records were smashed doesn't surprise me at all. It's what I would have expected.

Default Amazing auction

I was bidding on 30 different cards but ended up with zero. I was hoping to pick up a few if I thought they were bargains, but no go. The PSA slabs bring a lot of value, that's for sure.

Default Cheap......

$8 million was cheap (if you had it!)

I'm amazed it went that low cumulatively.

The most expensive painting ever sold was: $450 million by Da Vinci named "Salvator Mundi" in 2017.

Basically Salvator Mundi sold for more than 50 times the BEST ever T206 set!?!?!?

Seriously. That set went cheap. The rich get richer!

Peace, Mike

Imagine how much they'd have brought if all of them were intact...

I'm 62 years old and went to shows and card stores since the 80's and in all my years of seeing T206's I've never seen cards that pristine. I saw a lot of fat border T206's back then. Then again I've walked in the woods since I was a kids and never saw Bigfoot either.
