Default Question for you Nadja Caramel experts

Posted By: Jim Clarke

Brought this card back from nationals and it has been dated by Mark Macrae between 1891-1896. What is the history of Nadja Caramel?

Default Question for you Nadja Caramel experts

Jim,
All I know is that Nadja was based in St. Louis and that somebody on this board was able to isolate their whereabouts and in an earlier thread provide a picture of their facility. Sorry for telling you what you probably already know.
Scot

Default Question for you Nadja Caramel experts

Posted By: Sean

here is my explanation

E104 cards are broken down into 3 different sets. All E104 cards are very hard to find. The empty spaces in the checklists indicates that a card is not known (at least to me) of that player/back combination. Even though 2 of the sets consists of Philadelphia and Pittsburgh players it should be noted that Nadja was a company based in St. Louis, Missouri.

Since ALL E104 cards are very hard to find it is difficult to easily say set 1, 2 or 3 is any harder to find. If you have any card not listed above please share it with your fellow collectors and send me a scan. I'd be glad to include it. Send to: petecld@earthlink.net

E104.1 - This set of 18 cards consists of all Philadelphia Athletics players. They are all portraits and can be found with a "World's Champions 1910" tag line written over their heads along with an elephant logo on the chest. Each player may exist with a blank back or with a back that has a Nadja Caramel ad.

These card would have been issued very late in the year 1910 or in 1911.

Since no cards have been found with the "World's Champions 1910" line AND a Nadja back it is a possibility that these cards with the tag line were only distributed in the Philadelphia area. Why would a St. Louis company make a special effort to advertise for the Philadelphia team? This could also explain why when E104s are found, they are found with a blank back, signaling that their distribution was wider. This is pure speculation.

E104.2 - This set of 11 cards consists of all Pittsburgh Pirates players from the 1909 season. They are all portraits and are the same poses used in the E90-2 American Caramels set. They can be found with backs that are blank or with a Nadja Caramels ad.

Pete had not update his site in awhile, as evidenced by the lack of my e104-3s not being listed on the checklist.

This ain't gonna last long folks. No time to baby sit.

Jim- Nadja Caramels were put out by Blanke-Wenneker Candy Company of St.Louis. Here is a sort of missing link (I think) box that seals the deal. It is patented 1890.

Who is Murray can't find this player ever playing for Detroit? Also, the only Willis I know of, played for Detroit in 1984.

Sean's post is the longest by inches we have ever had. It's longer than the dead sea scrolls. Sean, you really need to go with a decaffeinated coffee.

Looks like summer school is working for Sean. As for everyone who thought he was an adult, looks like you might have been right about this one.

Oops, sorry. I just read the first few lines and didn't realize he had copied and inserted the content. My bad.

Who would have ever guessed that Sean is actually our resident caramel expert Pete C.

How clever Pete - you almost had me fooled but I recognized that write up the minute I read it.
