Default COPELAND SALE CATALOG ON EBAY

Posted By: Jay Miller

For anyone who doesn't have a copy of this catalog there is a mint copy on ebay now with a BIN of $20. The item number is 2773856958. I would consider this a great reference piece for the vintage collector and think the price is a bargain.

I think I got mine on ebay for $8. It does have a lot of great stuff in it, including the t206 Wagner in it's 1991 state:

Default COPELAND SALE CATALOG ON EBAY

I have a large collection of auction catalogs from the 1990's until now (Lelands, Mastro, Sotheby's, Halper, Grey Flannel) as I find them to be the best reference tool for vintage memorabilia (since there don't seem to be any great memorabilia coffee-table style book).

I read about the Copeland sale awhile back in an issue of Beckett Vintage and had wanted to get a copy ever since. Thanks for the tip!

........but it looks way too small for me. That card should have fat borders.

In the Copleand catalog, many to most of the images crop the cards, so they aren't reliable to judge size, edges, etc-- including for the Wagner ... I don't have the catalog anymore, but I beleive the description assigns the Wagner a grade of Mint.

Almost all images were cropped - How can you bid on a card when you can't see the borders? Very strange.

The image posted above was scanned directly from the auction catalog. It's interesting to see the predicted prices of items back in '91 - some prices seem absurdly high, but others, like Wagner, are on the low side - maybe they were pricing it based on it being trimmed?

I also found the image cropping interesting. Perhaps the auction was a largely in-person 'live' auction, and most of the bidders were there to view the wares.

David, you are correct.

For those interested, I can make scans of a detailed report about Jim Copeland's auction made by Lew Lipset back in 1991.
It includes a complete realized price list with high bidder paddle numbers as well as Lipset's point of view about some lots, high reserve prices and misc. information.

Scott, I'll send you the baseball guide scans as soon as I get home from biz trip this weekend.
