Default 1984 Cal Ripken All-Star Blank Back

So, I purchased this card out of curiosity and submitted it to PSA in a batch I was submitting. It came back as N9. RETURN NO GRADE.

Why don't they tell me why? What is the rationale? It's clearly a legit Topps card.

Does anyone know how rare these might be or be able to tell me what PSA couldn't condescend to explain as to why it's not gradeable, I'd appreciate the insight!

If you don't mark on the form that you'll accept an "Authentic" grade then PSA will send your card back ungraded because it was not eligible to receive a number grade.

I guess I'm wondering why it's not eligible. I feel like PSA could at least give a one sentence explanation.

Default Blank backs

I am not a graded guy but maybe they do not grade proofs or blank backs or wrong backs. There are some player and general collectors who collect such cards but in my experience they do not usually carry big premiums. There are exceptions, like the 67 Maris as a Yankee or the 77 Jackson as an Oriole, but usually because the front differs from the regular issue cards. The 84 Topps Encased or Head in the Box cards are other examples.

The 1982 Topps Ripken blank backs are almost always fakes. Your 1984 card is probably just a pritning error and should have been graded as authentic by PSA

Thanks to those that responded. I've thrown it up on eBay, whatever it gets, it gets.

Carlton was on the 84 box and part of the banner that says "baseball" goes over the lower right corner.

Default 1984

He does appear in the blank backed 24 card/12 panel set that could be cut from the Topps Sticker boxes that year, but not that card

Somewhere I have a couple of blank back 87 Topps cards that came from a pack.

It could be something like that.

I have 1000's of Topps blank front/back and wrong backs from the 80's. They are not rare and it is not even close to a possible 1/1. The stars from that era do command a premium. Usually $5-$20 each compared to the basically worthless regular issue.
