I just got a catalog in the mail today and this caught my eye:

The hobby's newest auction house - Heritage Sports Collectibles - has decided to distinguish themselves from the competition by raising the buyer's screwing fee to 19.5%. But that is only if you bid through them. If you bid through one of their eBay live auctions the fee is only 24.5%.

I'll bet if I shop around I could get a better rate from a loan shark.

Pretty soon you won't be bidding on the item ... you will be bidding on the BUYER'S PREMIUM rate!!!

Imagine the Ads for this Auction:

ALL ITEMS LISTED FOR ONLY $100 !!!

Buyer's Premium - CURRENT BID: 250%

NEXT BID: 275%

Hal

It's starting to look like a CONTINGENCY FEE! Who would ever charge those outrageous amounts?

Yes, I got my copy as well and noticed the high fee. I will not support those fees and thru my copy in the trash. Enough is enough on these fees. I'll just wait until they make 50K groupings and go in on a deal with a few people. Or wait until they hit Ebay as single lots without fees.

It gets worse. If I go to the auction in Long Beach next weekend, it is 19.5% PLUS 8.25 sales tax.
This screwing comes complete without benefit of clergy- I need a few cards in this one, but not that bad.
Do you think Mastro, et al, are watching this?

outrageous buyers' fees...otherwise, it appears to be a nice auction, with interesting things in it. WHO CARES?

In Alameda County, California, where I live, the sales tax is 8.75. I believe there is ONE county with a higher sales tax in the U.S. Does anyone know what it is?

I should add that many bb card dealers in the Bay Area eat the tax...and have ever since it was a miniscule 8.25, or even 7.75...

I noticed the high premium too. Even worse, it's buried in fine print among a bunch of (lower) premiums for various types of non-sport lots. I guess they figure only the sports collectors are suckers.

What I like about the eBay Live auctions is that they give the total including premium before you press the bid button. They add it up for you. Some auctions have 20 percent premiums, but you know what is the real bid.

IMHO these guys are no competition for the current major sports auction houses and the higher buyer's fee just makes them a complete joke. The good news is that Steve Ivey found a job for Chris.

If you are going to leave 35%-45% on the table, plus costs to ship to them, why not sell it to a dealer instead and have hime come to you and pay cash?
