Default 1963 Topps Question

I noticed some 1963 Mets cards have NY Mets and others New York Mets…. What’s the deal? What series contained which ?
Thanks Scott

Never noticed that before, the 1st Series has both N.Y. and New York, the 3rd Series has N.Y. but otherwise it looks like all of the rest are New York.

Interesting...I was looking through my set last night and after reading this tried to see if there was any patterns as to when they would use the different spellings. No rhyme or reason...color didn't matter, neither did size of the players name. Looks really random...good catch, I will now not unsee that...

Dean's cards isn't good for much but they do have this handy page where you can scroll thru the '63 Mets team set and check out the two team name variations

The same holds true for the Yankees. The legend on the Maris card is “New York Yankees”, but on Mantle it’s “N.Y. Yankees”. Not sure why the discrepancy, it’s not due to a space issue where it is on the card or anything. Berra also got “N.Y. Yankees”.

I guess there was just less insinuated need for precision back in the day…

Not sure I understand the question, or at least why it's limited to New York. Seems that many (all?) teams have different abbreviations; e.g. Indians show “Clev.”, "Cleve” and “Cleveland”, and Colt '45s show "Hous.", "Houston" and even just "H.". The choice didn't really seem to be limited to space limitations but I only made a cursory check. Am I missing something?

I'm guessing a lot of the proof sheets back then were just mocked up by hand. I know they were in '67, what with the whole "Tom" vs. "Tommy", "Tommie" Reynolds card and the weird spacing that wound up on the final version. Keith Olbermann has a whole article on that somewhere.
