Default Jay Publishing Photos

Does anyone know if a checklist exists that lists which year (set) a certain pose exist in Jay Publishing photos ? For example: if a player is batting ( what year), the same player is fielding etc. Would like to see a checklist that describes the photo, not just a list of the players in the set . Just listing the players does not tell me which year it is from, since the same players were in many years. Thanks

Default Good luck

I have done some research on these related to the Pirates because I am a Clemente collector. They can be very confusing. There are some minor crop variations that will be from different years. The best way I was able to compile the information I have on the Pirates was comparing many complete 12 picture sets. There are a couple of guys who are HUGE collectors and documenters of the Jay issues - I unfortunately do not remember their names right now. There may be a couple of threads here on Net 54 about them. You might also find some answers by posting the ones you are curious about.

Default Red Sox

I have done the same as Howard for the Red Sox and Ted Williams for the late 50's (1957) thru the 1960 Jay Publishing sets. Besides some variations in cropping, sets often changed during the season. I have at least 8 different "Red Sox Photo Packs (with player changes or cropping changes)" for these 4 team years.

As an example with the late 1959 Red Sox (post-season, but 1959 team players), Jay Pub added "Boston Red Sox" to the bottom of the photos, then changed the team players and subsequently the pack as the 1960 season started, then had another change mid-season when the manager changed, so, in reality, there is a 1959.5 set, a 1960.0 set and a 1960.5 set, and the cropping can even change within these three packs.

As far as the 1961-1963 Red Sox with Yaz, I have some knowledge, but the fine details drop off for these years as I do not have ALL the Jay Publishing sets to study. Not much info on Red Sox packs after this, and NONE on other team sets.

I know many collectors, including myself, have been confused between the Jay Publishing Photos and Photos obtained at the stadiums. The Jay Publishing photos always include : the city ( Detroit Tigers), and the Stadium Photos only list ( Tigers ). Many listings on ebay etc. are wrong. Also Type 1 ( 1958-1961) has Sans-serif Typeface, and Type 2 ( 1962-1965) has serif typeface.

Mike, like others I collect the photo sets of a particular team. In my case it's the Yankees. As others have said, the same photo may be used for several years with slight differences in the crop of the photo. To illustrate this, I've attached several Jay's photos of Mantle from 1957 to 1960 with one unknown year. The first photo came from their 1957 Portfolio pack with 25 photos and is the same as found in the 1958 team 12-pack. The next photo came from the 1958 World Series 12-pack with just the Yankees and is also in the World Series 24-pack with the Braves. The third photo came from a 1959 team 12-pack. The fourth photo came from the 1960 team 12-pack (and is also in the 1960 All-Star pack). The last photo is of an unknown year. It came in a set listed on eBay as 1957, but the set had 16 photos. Looking at the colorization on the back, I figure 6 photos are from one year and the other 10 are from another. I'm not sure what years. It's very close to the 1958 World Series photo, so it may be around then.

I was going to try to come up with something for 70s/80s Dodger packs, the stadium issue kind that are similar to jays, but I don't think they actually are. I must have 30 packs, but can't confirm that any are original as issued other than the 1 set I actually bought at Dodger Stadium in 1980. I did find a bunch of variations, but never got around to trying to pinpoint year of issue. I suspect several were used across different years though, making it that much more difficult.

Here are the scans I did:

If I recall correctly the listing of the city - "Detroit" in your example above allegedly started in the mid to late 50's (I have seen the difference starting in 1959) - Some of the earlier ones cannot be identified that way. I believe one of the guys names who is heavy into these is Jack Webb. Not sure if he is on here.

What exactly are you trying to identify or collect?

I collect Aaron, and there is just terrible confusion over the Jays and stadium issues. I just pick up ones I don't have, assuming I can sort them out later.

This was labeled a 1959 Jays by PSA [not this specimen; I saw it for sale elsewhere in the slab]; I believe it is a team issue:

This one I've seen offered as a Braves stadium issue and also as a 1958 Jays:

This Clemente was labeled a team issue when I bought it:

I'm assuming this is a 1959:

Seller labeled this a 1960s team issue:

The last four all look the same to me.

I have a lot of Detroit Tigers Jays Publishing photos and I would like to be able to sort them by year. I've seen checklists but it doesn't state if the player's photo is a portrait, or at bat or fielding etc. so I don't know what year to put many of them in . It appears to be a lot of guess work and with small crop changes it may not be possible.

Default Jay Photos

Hi Guys:

In my quest to collect the Phillies Jay photos I did find some people out there who have checklisted the various Jay and Team Issued similar sets.

I got this Phillies list which I assume is what you all would want for the team sets you collect.
