National pickups
I was torn between posting these in the July pickups thread, starting an August pickups thread early or starting a thread just for National pickups. Because the July thread already is long and not wanting to deprive Bob of starting the August thread later today, I went with option No.3.
Finally picking up an E101 Lajoie, despite the poor condition, would have made the show a success for me on its own. Landing a Baltimore Newsboy Lajoie was way beyond my expectations. Editorial: There's so much to be said for being able to hold a card in your hand, look the seller in the eye and negotiate a price that's void of a buyer's penalty and shipping and "handling" costs. Plus, you're not worried about being shilled or losing out on a card "selling" to another "bidder," then seeing the same card turn up for sale on the auction house's table or in another of its auctions down the line. Definitely a good time in Cleveland. Last edited by Rob D.; 07-30-2009 at 01:36 PM. |

Looks like you did some business with Luckey & co. Glad you landed an E101 Lajoie; see you at dinner.

Rob,
Nice cards. Noticed your address. 1 Happy Street. You have every reason to be happy. I am envious. I am just starting over hoping to slowly buy neat cards like these after selling all my vintage stuff 15 or so years ago. Yeah I was stupid. Thanks for sharing. Mark |

Picked up a few T206s
Prewar I picked up a Titus (Old Mill), a Chase trophey and my first Cy Young. The show was great, the prices reasonable, and the best part was the Net 54 dinner. Thanks Leon for organizing it!
Best, Joe |

My own MasterCard moment
Time spent driving to / from National Show . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 8 hours
Cash spent for gas, tolls, breakfast, and show admission . . . . . . $68 Maximum amount of time available for searching show . . . . . . . . 120 minutes Finding and purchasing four obscure autographs on Want List . . . PRICELESS My apologies for not stopping by to introduce myself to those of you set up at the show, but I was under a severe time crunch. It didn't look like I was going to make it to this year's National Show, due to having an "unavoidable, yet important" (as defined by the Mrs.) engagement to attend with her. She thought I was nuts in my decision to drive 8 hours and hand over nearly $70 in gas, tolls, and admission fee, just for the opportunity to spend a measily 2 hours looking for autographs on my want list. That thought crossed my mind too, during the four hour drive to Cleveland. Especially since my finds are frequently few and far between. It's gotten to the point where I now consider the National a "great" show if I find and purchase just one name on my want list. Fortunately, the last four National shows that I have attended have been "great". But Thursday, the National Show reached a much higher level, because today I scored big, with the purchase of four obscure ballplayer autographs on my want list. The first purchase was a partial 1931 Detroit Tigers team sheet, with separable signatures of Orlin Collier and Chas. Sullivan. I suspect that a John Grabowski signature may have once graced this sheet too, but was previously removed. Doesn't matter to me. Collier and Sullivan were the names on my want list. My next find was a signed index card of Jack Morhardt, and I followed that with the purchase of a vintage album page cut of Carl Holling. Needless to say, the four hour drive home was better than expected, and I actually enjoyed myself at my Mrs. planned event. I wish you all similar success with having your own MasterCard moment. |

National Pick ups
There were amazing cards available--almost as if some of the dealers opened their vaults and brought out their prized cards. I saw three T204 square frames, and a T204 of Burkett in a PSA 5 holder. The great cards available go on and on. I picked up a number of Obaks and Zeenuts, but felt these two were my best acquisitions of the show. Enjoy.
Cheers, Mike PS--How intresting would it be to have been the Captain of the Gay Base Ball team?! Last edited by Michael Peich; 08-01-2009 at 08:41 PM. |

Headed to this year's National with 5 cards needed for my T205 base set. I was hoping to find at least one, maybe two. Was on cloud nine when I was able to land these 4, leaving just Tyrus. (nothing like saving the big boys for the end.) But the highlight of the event, for me, was finally getting to meet Matt and Turner Engle. They really helped getting me going on the set and have provided so much direction along the way. I wonder exactly how many cards in my set went through their hands at one time? (I'm pretty sure at least 2 of the above did). Thanks guys...see you in Baltimore. Tyler Last edited by Tyler; 08-03-2009 at 06:26 AM. |

Re: National pickups
My favorite pickup (the E90-1 Matty wasn't bad either). Anyone care to guess who the signers are and what the item was?

Hi Tyler,
Thank you for the kind words. It was nice meeting you at the show as well. Congrats on the pickups, a few of those look very familiar. I wish you the best of luck in finishing your T205 set. The Cobb shouldn't be too tough to pick up. My best, Turner Engle Last edited by asoriano; 08-03-2009 at 04:28 PM. |
