Default 1955 Bowman Umpires - Send to PSA - part2

1955 Bowman Umpires

Since I will be sending the Ryans in, I figured I would ask if any of these are worth while to go for high Mint grades since they are low in higher grade population.

I have a fairly decent group of umpires here. Feel free to point out 1 or multiple cards of potential value and/or grade(s) possible with PSA. As of now they are the best dupes of my partial set(80%). These are higher on average grade than the set I have built so that is why I am considering to grade them and then sell.

This is the only set I ever wanted to collect. I know it is not the most popular set, but I still love it.

* Sorry scan heavy.

When it comes to umpires, the ones that are in the Hall of Fame, many have their rookie/only cards in this set from their umping days.

I think the only guy you have that's on the list is Al Barlick, and that card looks pretty sharp and nicely centered. I would expect a 6 or 6.5 I think on that one. Your Paparella looks to have a stain or mark on the back top right corner. Other things I would worry about are the centering both front and back. Like your Rommel or Napp might get MC/OC qualifiers due to the back of the card, since there's not white border around the black box or peach box, from what I can see.

You may want to get a subscription to vintagecardprices or worthpoint to see what high grade examples of these have sold for in the past, but here are representative numbers from the SMR:
HOF Umps 5: 40 6: 65 7:110 7.5:140 8:235 8.5:365 9:825
Non-HOFs 5: 13 6: 20 7: 35 7.5: 50 8: 90 8.5:145 9:415

So I would definitely send the Barlick in, and if you have a Chylack, Conlon, or Hubbard, the same. The others ones would need to be NM-MT 8 or so to have good retail value for your grading. That's why I wouldn't send in any that are MC or OC. This set has tiny borders that will skew the off-center numbers more easily than most sets. The Gorman, Bellenfant, and Engeln picture all three look OC/MC.

Ty for the suggestions on the Umpires. I will have to check out my entire Bowman set now for the centered 100% for a 9/10 since it seems very tough to find. I was previously only looking for my high grade umpires.

I only thought about grading them because some of my fronts are solid and the backs on PSA 8/9's have some variance of ugliness.

Examples Below.

Am I crazy to grade all of these and just hope more than 1 reaches an 8 or 9? Even if some of the grades are 6/7 or OC something. If I send it in a group for the cheaper rate. It seems worth it instead of selling them 5-$15 a piece for an umpire ungraded. If people think they can get it graded high they may pay more, but that is why I would rather grade it now and know. If this is a complete waste and none of these have any chance of getting a high grade then I won't do it.

Thank you for the help again.

Well, send in the best five first. Or sign up for the annual membership and send in 15 cards, including your Ryans. You'll be able to see what scores high and what doesn't.

Seeing high Buy-It-Now prices is good, but checking completed listings is more important.

I personally wouldn't send in MC/OC cards, but yours do look really nice. The pool of buyers drops when it comes to cards with qualifiers. If you do get some high dollar grades back, you can sell them and use the money towards grading more cards.
