Default Willie Mays PSA DNA Red Flip... questions

(note: I posted this over in Modern Baseball Cards Forum (1980-Present) first, before realizing there was an auto forum)

I don't collect autos. (Not yet at least).

So I won a lot of cards and in the lot is a 1972 IA Willie Mays PSA/DNA (Red Flip)

I'm probably going to sell it off when the lot does get into my hands, but I want to learn more about in the process.

Here's some questions I have about this card and others... any response is much appreciated!

How much does the year/scarcity of the card affect the the value?
How much does the "grade/eye appeal" of the card itself affect value?
Does the type of writing utensil have any affect on value, i.e. blue vs black, pen vs marker?

Is there anything else that I should know or be intrigued by?

Lastly, if you had to put a range of value of the card, what would it be?

Thanks, fellas!

I'd guess you would get around $50 or $60 for that card.

This card is less desirable because:

- the condition of the card is off
- it is an action card, and not really a player issue card
- it is not as visually appealing as other cards

Not to hijack the thread, but I've always wondered what the difference is between the blue flip and red flip autographs. I emailed PSA, but they weren't much help.

From what I looked up...
Blue flip authenticates just the signature.
Red flip authenticates the card and the signature.

That's what I got from a quick internet search... and we all know everything on the internet is 100% factual truth.

So, I'm assuming that for this card, the blue flip would have been suffice, as I doubt anyone is concerned about the authenticity of this 1972 card in ~VG condition.

Response to questions

1- Yes a more valuable card would add to value Not Many 51 Bowman or 52 Topps Vintage Autographed Mays cards around. (remember for many years card collector's felt that an auto detracted from card not added to it)
2- Eye Appeal IMHO this card has wonderful eye appeal bold vintage pen signature across a sliding Willie...NICE (His last card in a SF uniform).
3- again IMHO same card with sharpie recent auto would not have same value as this card with vintage pen signature so instrument has affect.

I would say more like $100-$200 for value AGAIN imho.

Good luck
J

I did an ebay search of sold listings for that card and came up with 4 that had sold recently, ranging from $20-$50 however, none of them were slabbed as yours is.
