Front appearance is everything for me with N172s. I wonder if anyone can guess the grades of these.

Jim B.- I'll guess the Darling is an SGC 20 (I once owned it).

Jim C.- I have a 9 in my current auction. It's got your name written all over it! (well not literally all over it, then it wouldn't grade 9)

I agree with JimB....those are likely all PSA 1's....great fronts, but back damage. I feel the same. I am happy with nice OJ fronts and don't look at the backs:

All the examples offered are terrific, which brings up an interesting question: what causes Old Judges, among other photographic issues, to fade? Exposure to light doesn't make sense, as the majority of survivors were kept in scrapbooks or cigar boxes and never saw much light at all. So were they light coming off the press, due to an overused negative?

The same could be asked about pink Old Judges, which typically have poor images. What caused so many of them to have this flaw? Perhaps poor reaction to chemicals used during developement? Jay Miller once suggested the pinks were done deliberately, as an experiment, but I just don't know.

Not a high grade but one I thought would be at least a 7.

The Brouthers is an SGC 40, apparently due to a small tobacco stain on the reverse. The Van Haltren is one of the rare pink OJs with a pretty good image.

At one time I had 17 very nice OJ's---had them all graded by SGC.

Gradually sold or traded them off and kept these 2 for last:

Both were sold in 1 Lot in Lelands auction about 3 yrs ago--always wondered if someone on the Board ended up w/ them. I know several of the other 15 were bought from me by Board members several yrs back in EBay auctions---incl a few "7's".

Kramer ~ how is the image on your Uncle Bill Alvord, is it as crisp and clear as those of Fred Y ?
Or is it similar to the PSA 6s which you showed previously?

High grade?

I've seen enough OJs in 6 or 7 slabs that have nice sharp corners but poor images. Let's define "high grade" as the term applies to OJs. I'd take an OJ that has a crisp clear image which resides in a "2" holder over an OJ in a 7 or 8 holder that has a light image but razor sharp corners.

Without referrence to any cards depicted in this thread, but have others noticed that both PSA and SGC seem to be much more tolerant on corners when grading N172s than with almost every other issue. Regularly I see cards graded 84/7 that would be 5s at best if they were T206s. I have also seen many 6's and 7's that have images that are so faded, one can hardly make them out. I think there need to be a serious rethinking of how to evaluate N172s by grading companies.

Both of them have a history of being unwilling to change when faced with a similar collectible: our earliest cents and half cents. These were manufactured under comparitively crude technology. Before electricity and during a time when each die was hand engraved. This coupled with an inconsistent supply of copper yielded a collectible which demands insightful criteria be established and employed.

Their unwillingness to modify their techniques has resulted in them being ignored by the majority of the collectors in this area of numismatic specialization. I forcast the same occuring with OJs and similar issues.

Here's a low grade nice image of Radbourn. I'd take this over a PSA6 with a light image. The reason for a grade of "1" is because there is scrap book remnants on the back of the card.

I've posted these before, but what the heck. While there are other higher grade OJs, the Gypsy Queen & N173 Cabinet are highest graded by SGC (representing all 3 Goodwin & Co. sepia baseball issues).

Jim,

I'll give you an N172 Ganzel Fielding P-F plus an N29 Getzin PSA 1 for that Harry Wright. But you need to respond quickly - I won't hold this offer open forever, you know!

Seriously, are you freaking kidding me with those? Wow. Nice cards.

I buy OJs based on the subject and then appearance of the front. The scrapbook removal creates relative bargains I guess -- although getting a really nice looking card back with a "1" still feels bad...
