Vote!! The worst Topps produced set of the 1970's

With the first two decades closed its on the the worst Topps set of the 1970's. Just like in the last two polls pick which set you feel was the worst offering given.

After this poll closes in 5 days we will pit the three sets against each other to seewhat was the all time worst.

As always all comments and discussions are welcome.

There are a few sets from the '70's I don't like,but I think the '74's are my least favorite.

I think the 74's get a bad rap for a couple of reasons. The set precedes, and is consequently compared to, the 75 set with it's powerhouse rookie crop and bold colors. When you take those away, the 75's are lacking to me because of the bland, uninspired photos. The 74's also suffer, IMO, because it is the first set to be released nationwide in one series.

I think the 74 set actually is quite strong for the following reasons: 1. Most of the action photos are outstanding; 2. The leader and all-star cards are the best of the decade; 3. The Aaron #1 card is just cool and an iconic 70's card; 4. The "Washington" variations provide an interesting subset that really isn't present in other sets from the 70's.

Having said this, we are supposed to pick the worst produced set. I will have to go with the 1970's due to the drab color. I would follow this up with the 1979's running a close second.

It was a toss up between '70 and '78 for me with '74 not too far behind. '78 eventually won out with it's terrible script team names.

I chose 79's.
Uninspiring design and too similar to the 76's

1976 and 1979 are 2 of the worst all time IMHO. 1976 is the worst to me because of the horrible backs.

I agree, but I think 78 is the worst. I would take any of the 50s or 60s sets over 74, 76, 78 or 79. Design really started dropping off in the mid 70s forward.

I chose 1978. The design just seems like something a knockoff card company would come up with, not a major company.

So it was a toss up for me between 74 and 79. I tend to like most things vintage - so leaned toward 79. 74 had HUGE centering issues and a design I didn't particularly care for. 79 - only thing going for it imo was the Ozzie rookie. Really boring card design. Interesting that 78 is in the running - It was the first set I collected - I still remember Billy Almon of the Padred being the card I needed to finish it - too much nostalgia attached for me to even consider!

I for one enjoyed the 1978s........I am thinking back as a kid and it would be hard to pick a bad set as a kid since we LOVED baseball cards so is this question being asked now as an adult?

Either way, 1978 produced one of my favorite cards which was Doug Ault of the Jays. It was as close to an action shot that you could get in that set.

If I had to pick a least favorite of the 1970s it would be 1973. Very bland. As a kid, I would have said there were no least favorites but since you asked...

I could only pick one so it's 1979, but 1978 and 1976 are close behind - nothing inspiring about any of these designs to me.

My beloved '79s are crushing the competition, but in the wrong way.

My top 3 worst are (in chronological order):
1970 - Just an abject borefest. No excitement whatsoever (except for the #1 World Champions Mets team card!! Woo hoo!!).
1971 - Although many collectors hold this set in high regard, Topps should have included a pair of crime scene gloves in each pack so kids could delicately handle the cards without immediately destroying the black corners and edges. Whereas most cards from other years got mangled by being placed in between bicycle spokes, these suckers were damaged before you even left the stationery store.
1975 - Eliminate the bevy of sick rookie cards and what are you left with? An extremely boring set virtually devoid of any action. And what's with those wacky border colors??!! However, I guess a case could be made that those very same crazy colors made the rules of card flipping with your friends a breeze.

For me, the 71 set is a non favorite for several reasons.

1. 751 ( or whatever the exact number of cards is ) is just a little to large of a set for me.

2. Backs are printed on that dark green paper and just generally hard to read and unattractive.

3. These set looks ok if sharp, but there is nothing uglier than those bet up 71 cards that can be found in quarter boxes at shows throughout the country.
