Default Crossovers - crack or not?

Posted By: Anson

Have any of you had any experience with crossovers where you've found cracking them out yields better results than leaving them slabbed? Does the bad blood between these companies carry over in their crossover grading?

Default Crossovers - crack or not?

Don't have any experience, but if i was going to do that, i would crack a few psa's to send to SGC. I think that giving someone a blank slate rather than a pre-conceived notion is best in the spirit of obtaining a "true" grade for a card. As far as the bad blood thing, i couldn't imagine it would have any affect on the grade. The three possibilities would be to intentionally a) give it a higher grade b) give it the same grade and c) you guessed, give it a lower grade. Giving it a higher grade might seem like it would be advantageous in order to slam the previous grading company...but if a company did that on any scale whatsoever, then people are going to start recognizing the artificial nature of the grades and be driven away from the service. If they were given the same grades, well that wouldn't accomplish anything at all and c) giving it a lower grade would cause people to stop using the service for fear of loosing a great deal value in them. Thus giving the card an honest grade is the best way to go. Grading cards fairly and accurately (if there really is such a thing) would be the best way to attract clients to the service b/c dealers and collectors would see the true value of the card (Although graded cards are artificially inflated anyway).

(Although as Ted said--what would they do if they didn't like the card being in the holder?) Probably get the most honest grade raw, though..what am I talking about? I don't know nothin' 'bout gradin' cards...

I think cracking out cards out of PSA holders to submit them to SGC is a horrible mistake. It's a good way to end up with "trimmed" return stickers and end up not having them graded by anyone.

Both SGC and PSA have a service where you will get the card returned in its original slab if it fails to make your minimum grade request. Submitting GAI cards to PSA is an almost complete wate of time however, as the animus from PSA makes it so that 90%+ of the slabs will be returned with a "trimmed" notation on them.

I cracked a few cards out of PSA holders and sent them to SGC only to find that they were returned to me as trimmed. After looking at the cards a little more closely they were right! I have had two cards from PSA holders returned to me as trimmed. Caution, don't crack them out! Just my 2 cents.
