Default T206 Titus Auction on eBay

Posted By: T206Collector

Am I missing something? I get that Titus is a bit tougher -- since, I suspect, mustached T206 afficionados must have it -- but over $100 for an SGC 40?

It has always been a popular card exactly because he is the only mustache. But the winning bidder had a 2 feedback, so he may just be a beginner and unfamiliar with pricing.

...upgrading my 1's to 3's this month, but if a Titus 40 is going to cost me $100, I'll stick to upgrading my southern leaguers first. Indeed, this morning I picked up a tough Mullaney SGC 40 on ebay as a BIN for $79.00.

true, it is the only card depicting a player with a mustache...but, i think it has more to do with the fact that it is a slightly tuffer common, with very few high-grade examples...there is definitely a "trickle-down" effect from the prices of scarce high-grade examples...by the time it gets down to 3's & 4's, there is a slight premium involved.

I've never found the card to be tougher than the others in average condition.

just to clarify...i didn't mean to say it was tuffer in average grade, just that because of a lack of higher grade examples, the lower grades seem to be a bit more expensive then one might expect.

p.s. how is the auction going barry?

Less than a month ago, this PSA 4 sold for under $80.

Hi Michael- overall very well. This morning kind of quiet. People must be getting over their weekend hangovers

likely an over eager buyer + a top seller + other unexplained variables that account for the typical variance found in card prices. I dont think this is an indication of this card (or slightly tougher commons in general) going up in price (at least this dramatically).

A PSA 4 goes on average of $98. An SGC card of an equivalent grade goes for around $65.

Do you really think a card in a PSA holder is worth 50% more than its counterpart in an SGC? That seems hard to justify.

barry...just going with what vcp.com has on their site.

To be fair, i didnt report the N's. The PSA 4 population has an N of 7. The SGC had an N of 2. So, the larger the population, the less variance and a more trustworthy point estimate (although 7 is still small). So, the next SGC card sold could be $150...thus making the SGC average shoot way up.

I think it is slightly true because more collectors of T206 who want graded cards want them in PSA holders.

I'm not saying that makes sense to me... just that I believe it. I'd prefer an ungraded card. If graded, it seems to me that SGC has a better grasp of what they're trying to do.

It's odd because most vintage collectors prefer SGC (at least according to our survey).

I think most vintage collectors on this board prefer SGC....at least the ones that typically post. I don't think you can base actual vintage collector preferences on that. The amount of people on this board obviously make up a small minority of vintage collectors.

I guess PSA is still the name brand...but you do need to look at several transactions to get an accurate average.

...makes it pretty clear that there is some increase for PSA cards, but it is not 50%. Most of the time, they are neck and neck.

In any event, in the two examples I listed today, the SGC 40/VG/3 sold for over $100 while the PSA 4 (VG-EX) sold for under $80. There's some variance for you stats lovers....

I try and keep in mind that all it takes is two people to run the price up to an unrealistic amount. Sometimes we look for logical reasons, but maybe its just two uninformed buyers punchin it out on a common..
