Default 1936/37 Goudey wide pens/premiums - Feller

I’m confused, especially with regards to the Bob Feller cards, although there may be other players. A Bob Feller card isn’t shown on any checklist in the S.C.B. for 1936 Goudey Wide Pens; type-1, 120 players, type-2, 24 players or type-3, 24 players. He does show up on the checklist of 1937 Goudey Wide Pens, type-4 (36 players). PSA lists both a 1936 Goudey Premium Bob Feller and a 1937 Goudey Wide Pen, type-4. I have also seen these two slabbed with the different years. Feller images appear exactly the same on both; pitching with white sig, and blank backs. Are both cards actually the same ? Hard to imagine PSA being wrong about this and more likely, I’m missing something.

Also how can you tell if it’s the ‘Canadian’ Wide Pen ?

Yes, both are the same...There's been a few instances of cards, where PSA changed their mind about how to designate them.. They originally had the whole run lumped together as one. If not for the differences between the types, I believe the issue could very well have been singularly designated 1936-37.

The Canadian one's just featured players from Montreal and Toronto..Pretty much the same as type 4, separated by the fact that they featured players from the International League... Basically, type 4 and 5 are possibly the same series. But there will not be American/Canadian variations. It's one or the other..

As far as Feller goes, I believe that the only '36 issue he appears in is the "newspaper stamps"(pardon my crude designation of the series, as I can't remember which one he was in). There are a handful of '37 issues that he appears in.

Thanks for the education. Much appreciated. Still doesn't make much sense (to me) why PSA would list Feller (& Doeer) with a 1936 Goudey separately when he doesn't show up until 1937.

I think that the grading companies originally went with all of the cards from that series as 1936, then realized their error and started grading the ones going forward as 1937, this having a split pop report.

Default "Doeer" (Doerr) 1936 Goudey Wide Pen

I found this confusing also. Bobby Doerr was a Boston Red Sox rookie in 1937, but his Goudey Wide Pen Premium has been labeled "1936". I assumed that PSA just lumped all of the R314's as 1936, as that was the first year of issue. Bobby Doerr was playing for the PCL San Diego Padres in 1936. My Doerr true rookie card...........

I always thought it was interesting, though, that the R314 DiMag portrait (rather than the card he shares with Joe McCarthy) depicts him in a San Francisco Seals rather than a New York Yankees uniform, if it was truly issued in 1937, rather than '36. One would think that a lot of pics of Joe D in a Yankees uniform would have been available by '37, and preferred. On the other hand, the same picture was used as the basis for the 1938 Goudey DiMaggio, so who knows?

Best,

Larry
