Default Fake.

The paper folds reveal too white a stock and the wear looks unauthentic... like a newer card that was crunched up, not like an old card that was handled for 70 years.

Plus, the area on the back that would have the reprint info is scraped off and it's the only area on the back with that kind of wear... not a good sign.

I would say STAY AWAY> all the wrong characteristics, as mentioned.

I'm going to vote fake based on the back scans. It appears this card is hand cut which makes no sense for this issue, and there appears to be a black line running down the back on the right where it was intended to be cut from a sheet of other cards. Neither of these would appear on a real card issued in a pack.

fake! It's funny that he said he's selling it because he upgraded his. I wonder what he upgraded it to? I'm thinking the '89 Bowman reprint...

Question & Answer Answered On
Q: Hi, This is a reprint. You can easily tell by the typeface on the back. Also, the name Mickey Mantle is in red on the original, not in black, and the original has 1951 date at bottom. Someone aged the one you have listed, and also tore off the reprint info at the bottom. Thought you might like to know. If you are still in doubt, compare it to the back of some of the graded ones listed elsewhere. Jan-06-13
A: Hello!I have checked every listing on ebay for 30 days & there are no reprints like this & if you check the big Beckett Almanac it shows 2 types of 1951 high #s one was sold in sheets unfortunatly it does not show the backs,if I am right this is a very rare version of the card.I have owned this for years & I believe it to be real if you have any proof otherwise please let me know I am open to suggestions.thanks Bill

If it was real, it would be graded.

But it's at almost $500 with a day left.

The back text even doesn't line up with originals. For example one original line ends with "...199" while this one selling on Ebay ends "...199 hits."

I would highly recommend flipping through a few pages of PSA Authentic Mantle cards and checking the wear pattern. I have over 150 low grade mantles in my collection an after looking at several you really can get a sense of what wear occurs naturally. I have some beat up cards but can't recall ever seeing a real one with that color. That said, most of the "poor" fakes have nearly identical coloring.

I can't tell for the life of me whether most high grade cards are real or fake but fake "poor" cards pop out at you after a little experience.

Default Blatant and obvious reprint

Took a little while to find it, but I thought that reprint looked familiar: it's an insert card from an issue of Baseball Cards Magazine back in the late 1980's. Obviously, someone just cut it out and roughed it up to make it look aged. What was that seller talking about - "rare version...sold in sheets?" What a bunch of hooey.
Not only does the text not conform to the original, but the reprint is smaller in both dimensions.

I emailed the seller telling him it was fake. No response. It just sold for $620.

And that was even after somebody in the Q&A section said it was a reprint - absolutely mind boggling
