I think we should have three pick up sections. Maybe one for pre 1915 called antique pick ups, then 1916-1979 considered vintage pick ups. And modern will be 1980 up. V

Another big St. Paul Saints pickup!

This is a 1940 Chicago White Sox jersey worn by Larry Rosenthal (the Saints were a high level minor league club affiliated with the White Sox in the 1930s). Rosenthal was one of the most popular Saints of all-time. Rosenthal was born in St. Paul and it was the Saints GM that discovered him. He played six seasons with the Saints and 8 in the Majors. After his pro career ended, he continued to play amateur ball in St. Paul.

Snagged these negatives of Mantle's last ever at bat. September 28th, 1968. Mickey popped out to short in the first and was taken out for the ovation. Last time he ever swung the bat.

Thanks, yeah I think that would be a good one. According to the boxscore he was taken out after that at bat. I assume it was to get the ovation, but I am not 100% sure. Anyone know if he went out to his position in the bottom of the inning? If he did then that would be the last walk to the dugout.

In the second picture, I notice 3 things that may help.
1) Mantle appears to be wearing a hard helmet.
2) Mantle doesn't have a glove with him.
3) It appears that most of the people in the stands are sitting.

I would assume from those facts that this was him walking back to the dugout after popping out. I don't know if he was sent back out to field the next inning to get an ovation when he was removed, but it seems like it's a fairly common thing to do. I would expect that if this was his last walk to the dugout, the crowd would be standing and he would be waving back to them.

Despite that they are pretty cool images that can be linked to specific moment in time.

Not an incredibly early piece, but it captures that romantic "golden era" of Baby Boomer Baseball

I bet that the shot of him coming back to the dugout is after the at bat, and that he didn't take the field in the bottom of the inning. The NYTimes article from the next day makes a mention of Mantle having a sore right knee and ankle, and Houk only wanting him to take one swing that day, and only one the next. However, since he wasn't put in the next day, I guess he wasn't doing well enough to take that last swing. I would gather that no big deal was made of him coming back to the dugout after the pop out on the 28th, being that he played the full game the day before (though there is mention of him receiving a standing ovation during his first at bat of THAT game). What you probably have there is the final moment that Mantle was on the field during a game.

It's too bad we can't find out for sure whether the PA made an announcement when the Yanks took the field in their half. So of course, this is all just conjecture, but in my head, it seems to make some sort of sense. Then again, I just got back from the gym and my brain is noticeably fried.

Pat Olsen played with the Yankees in the early 20s, quit, went on to a career in oil, and eventually donated $$$$ to build the Texas A&M baseball stadium named in his honor. So while it's obscure, it's a huge find for me.

Cool Olsen pick-up. We were watching A&M vs Alabama this weekend and it reminded me of the opening of that stadium. For four years I had watched A&M's baseball games from the upper deck of the football stadium (before they added the third deck to Kyle Field), which formed the right-field wall of the baseball field. Pat Olsen stadium opened during my senior year (possibly my 2nd one) and was such a contrast - beautiful stadium, ball girls running around trying to find the foul balls we quickly hid. Great times. Mark Thurmond (later a Padre) was our star pitcher during those days.

Great times indeed. That was Kyle to Olsen was a huge change. Olsen to Blue Bell was another big leap. Lots of fun times. They need to get it together though.

Not sure how long I'll be keeping this one. But a 1930 game used bat of Frank "lefty" O'doul. Bat is in great shape, uncracked and just shows acouple ball and cleat marks.

OK, thats sounds about right. I always wondered wny he didn't play the last game. I thought maybe they would do like the Red Sox did with Ted Williams and not play him on the away games so the home crowd got to see his final at bat. But Mantle was not even sure he was retiring so i guess this was really no big deal.

Here is a small group of my recent Eagles pickups, in addition to a neat Phillies piece. The Eagles group includes a 1960's Eagles Cheerleader jacket, a late 1940's Vic Sears game used Eagles jersey, a 1978 cold weather long sleeve gamer, and a 1966 Irv Cross Eagles Pro Bowl Helmet. This helmet was Cross's actual Eagles helmet, that was painted gold, and had the NFL logos applied.
The Phillies piece is the original (or one of the originals) photos used to make the 1950 Phillies newspaper supplement panoramic photos. The photo has the gray photographer's paint applied around each player's head and above, and the last 3 players on the right were added into the photo. The photo is in 2 pieces, and has player's identifications glued below each player (some have fallen off).
