Default New Poll - Least Favorite Set

Posted By: Brian McQueen

I figured, the best thing to do with the polls for right now might be to go back to the polls that are simpler and fun. Hopefully this one will be free from controversy. For the new poll, I tried to think of the ugliest cards I've had in my collection - let me know if I missed an obvious one

According to the new poll, it's the R302 M & P that I am thinking of, and it's currently in the lead as least favorite set.

One thing about the strip card "w" sets. So many of them are unappealing that I could have dominated this poll with these sets just by listing them all out. So I pretty much condensed them into one catagory. The w512 set, 1921 W9316 set, w515s, etc...all resemble each other closely enough that I would say just vote for the w512 set I have listed if I don't have the specific ACC designation listed for your strip card set of choice.

Here's another.

It's a little slice of history, Barry. Only mainstream set produced during WWII.

joe,
you misunderstood my post....the football rrpc's are ugly and worthless....you would be better served flushing your money down the drain. most are reprints....and the ones that aren't have been soaked, stretched, trimmed, and/or rebacked.
just some friendly advice

I just have never gone nuts over the Goudeys. The 34's are alright. The big heads are cute. But other than that, they bore me. They are not the ugliest cards ever made, but, at least to me, they lack character. I know that is blasphemy. I know their will be a hit put out on me for saying this, but the 206's don't do much for me. I like the 207s and ramleys much more. Along with many others. I think the 206s are over rated.

It's one of only three pre-war cards I own but my R302 Hubbell is about the ugliest card I have ever seen. Sorry, I don't have a scanner right now so I cannot post this beauty.

Come on guys, the MP cards aren't so bad if you collect them in their original 8-card uncut strips.

Here's just half of one (my scanner couldn't accomodate the entire 8 cards).

The e91's aren't pretty, but some have neat backgrounds. I don't mind them that much. If they didn't use the same pictures for alot of the players, would you guys still hate the set ?

I'd have to say those crappy strip cards from 1919 or 20-ish are so damn ugly. Worst looking cards.

I also hate the new crappy cards now.

I was looking at the results of the latest poll and among those with the fewest "least favorite" votes is the Buchner Gold Coin set, and for good reason. It really isn't as bad as its reputation and is perhaps underappreciated. First, unlike the E91 set, there are many recognizable players, particularly among the HOFers. While many of the poses are duplicated and thus not accurate, there is still a beautiful portrait of Von Der Ahe, a diverse roster of players, back variations, cards with different levels of difficulty, and some really colorful and fairly well executed artwork. I think it is in fact the best set in the poll. And those MP302's (or whatever they are called - I refuse to learn their name) are rightly at the bottom of the barrel.

Barry - I'd tend to agree with you on the Buchner's. Definately not as bad as some of the other sets mentioned in the poll. I had to have a 19th century option though. Another one that isn't too awful is the t201 set but I wanted a mainstream "t" set to be included as well. It was important to get a variety of sets included in this. Like I was saying, if I just took the strip card sets from the early 20s, I would have filled up all the slots and wouldn't have room for anything else. I am happy to see that the votes have been spread a little more evenly amongst all the options this time around.

Now the T201 is a problem set, because not a single player is identifiable. However, I will give it a few pity points because of the innovative foldover design.

First of all the "cartoon" strip cards (W whatever). Second, E91 is a joke! There's a Honus Wagner up on Ebay right now. Might as well be Honus Schwartz. Lastly, Allen & Ginter is obviously a coveted set. I'm sure it's just me, but isn't it the "shiny ****" of the nineteenth century (compared to OJ or Goodwin)?
