Default What Is Your Favorite Caramel Set? Why?

Posted By: Paul

I mentioned in a post a couple months ago that I'm a postcard collector who recently figured out that Caramels are beautiful too. I've picked up about a dozen E90-1, & I'm starting to look at other sets. What I would like to know from the caramel collectors here is, what is your favorite caramel set & why? Thanks!

I've always favored E103s for a few reasons. I appreciate the relative scarcity of the set, and I like the fact -- don't ask me why -- that the issuer's name, Williams Caramel, is on the fronts of the cards. And I like the blank backs because paper loss isn't as big of a detractor (at least to me).

E95 -- it's the first caramel set I completed. The Cobb is a gem--one of the best looking cards of all-time.

E93 Standard Caramel is my favorite because it is the best-looking set IMHO and is full of HOFs. Here are a few samples...

Scott, I think the real Cy Young rookie is the Just So Cy Young. But, since there is only one known, E90-1 may be the next best thing.

The e93 Cobb was my first pre-war purchase

JimB, always amazed at the condition of your e93's.

Stuck at 25/30. Wish I had picked up the Wagner a few years ago before they took off.

Here's my only Mello Mint card...

The set I'd like to complete is the E102 set. I'd be content to get to 25 with them. But I think I may not get there... the few I see offered for sale are graded and go for more than I care to pay. I should have grabbed them 20 years ago.

The E90-1s are quite fascinating, though. And I guess that would be my 'favorite' set of E cards. Although Home Run Kisses and Zee-Nuts are up there.

tough, tons of HOF rookies, and I personally like cards that use photography vs. artwork.

the e97s have been my favorite for 6-7 years. you can only take so many wagner portraits or cobb leaping poses...i like the lesser name players and learn about them a bit, and they have some great poses. this year i've transitioned into the tougher black/white variation of the set and so far have 11 and slowly accumulating them (please contact me if you have any available).

Does E145 count? It's caramel coated popcorn.
Typically people think of E cards as T206 size cards, but if CJ's count I'll take that set hands down.
Great graphics, solid player selection, and Federal Leaguers in uniform.

Jim,
I love the Leach card. Especially given the recent sunset thread. If you picture him with a sailing uniform, he could be out on the water, given the colors in the background.

E90-1 American Caramel by a landslide for me. The challenge of finishing this 120 card
set can keep you busy for years. 10 to 15 cards from this set will have you pulling your
hair out trying to locate them. It's chock full of Hofer's and is home to Joe Jackson's
rookie card.

If it wasn't for the backs, I'd pursue the e90-1 set. I like the slightly primitive and colorful fronts as well as the increasing levels of scarcity of cards (I copied and saved the scarcity list that Tony Andrea posted a few months back). But the back design, even when I was kid, just bugs me. If ever there was a series that belongs glued into a scrapbook, it's the e90-1.

My favorite caramel set is not even listed as a caramel set. It is the mislabeled W503 set which is actually, in my opinion, a caramel set. It has pictures in the set not found in any other set.

Mid-sized set (50) and not impossible to find. I love these 2 cards, but some of the HOF cards are not so good (both wagners, young, tinker, chance)

you said "if it weren't for the backs you would collect E90-1"

the simplicity (no variations) are a positive i believe....puts the focus on the cards themselves and the rarities, not the endless variety of backs....i know its not caramel but the T206, actually is a set that never can be completed because to truly "complete" it you would need EVERY variation of EVERY card....impossible...

Scott, you must have me mixed up with someone else, I didn't say anything about the E90-1 set, in fact I have completed the set minus Joe Jackson and it is a nice set to collect. (Although not in the same class as the E94)

Scott,

Bob didn't say "if it weren't for the backs I would collect E90-1s." I did. To clarify, it has nothing to do with the lack of variation on E90-1 backs, it's purely because I find the E90-1 back design drab and uninspired. And I have no taste. Imagine if I did, I'd be using profanity to describe it. To me, it's a very cool set with an Achilles...um...Back.

Lots of great responses & beautiful cards posted. Thank you very much. I don't think I can pick just one or two sets to collect. Probably will try to pickup a couple from as many of the sets as I can. All of the caramel sets seem enticing. I suppose I'm hooked.....

Probably some of the nicest images of any set. The McGraw is awesome. The Johnson is the greatest card ever created. The Speaker is a thing of beauty.

Our favorite set will always be the E 125 American Carmael Die Set

As it turns out an older Kentucky gentleman is mid 80's discovered
some funny looking baseball cards ... he wanted to sell them
and a local tv station connected him with Mr. Mint or who had recently appeared
on the Today Show.

The gentleman called Mr. Mint. He said he couldn't visit him to look at some
funny looking die cuts... he told the guy to look at a Hobby Magazine called
The Trader Speaks...maybe he would find a collector.

Lucky for us... we had a full page ad for America's Toughest Want List
we got the call...took the trip and bought 20 American Caramel Die Cuts

Remarkably all were Pittsburgh players.

The nice old gentleman had never heard of a travelers check...so we had to ride
with him to the bank while he cased the checks.... He then took us to the airport

His parting words were that Mr. Mint sure doesn't know old cards.

We smiled and said goodbye and thought it was too bad that we didn't have enough travelers checks with us to purchase the 5 Tiffany Lamps that lite the room where we first viewed the cards

- - 'you mean the 1914 CJ, not the 1915 CJ ...correct sir?'

Well for the most part I prefer a '14 over a '15.....

but with regard to the Johnson - I was referring to the 'whole package' -
the amazing pose, the great player, the very cool brand 'Cracker Jack' - the shape of the card - the awesome bio on the back of the card.
Put everything together... and it wins first prize as far as baseball card craftsmanship.

Jim B - thanks for the kind words. Your e93s don't suck either. Well.... maybe the Matty sucks. Such an ugly card
