Default *New member introduction*

Hi all.

Lurker here for a few months now, but have now decided to create an ID and do a formal introduction.

Long-time collector; but took a long break between.

Unfortunately for me; have now collected during 2 very bad periods:
1. Late 1980's and early 1990's; during my teen years; now all those cards are mostly "worthless" from overproduction; so not even worth the grading fees.
2. Got back into the hobby a couple years ago; but mainly back last year. Bought a lot of graded cards (mostly PSA) during the "boom". So now holding a lot of "post-boom" cards after crash (go me!!!).

But, as my ID says, I am mainly a collector of Hall of Fame rookie cards in the 4 North American sports.

So hi all, and I hope to contribute as much as I can (and learn a few things along the way).

Hi Lee -

Welcome to the board! Always nice to see new members join, and especially ones that have an affinity for HOF rookies! That's my passion as well!

Welcome, Lee. Like Derek and yourself, I also have a lot of interest in Hall of Fame rookie cards from all 4 major sports. I formerly collected them and had a complete football set and about as close to a complete set of baseball as one could reasonably expect to achieve. Also had some basketball and a very limited number of hockey.

In addition, a couple of years ago, I compiled a 4 Sport Hall of Fame Rookie Cards Guide with well over 1,200 color images. I was never able to go to production with it due to financial constraints, although I do have a proof copy printed so I can see what the finished product would look like. Maybe one day.....

Thanks Derek, Phil, and Zach.

Of course, as one of my first "in depth reads" was about the DiMaggio fiasco; and surely that doesn't give me a "warm and fuzzy" feeling about the hobby.

Don't let that get you down...it's part of the hobby and will always be part of the hobby. You would have been even more depressed if you had read the thread from last year regarding shill bidding. If you stick with "collector grade" stuff and don't try to go for the "high end" / high grade cards, you will be (mostly) fine. If that's your thing, then you need to tread with caution...where there's money, evil lurks.

Thanks Derek for the words of encouragement.

Would you happen to still have the link regarding the shill bidding? I know what shilling is; but it is definitely something I should know more about.

In terms of the high-end stuff, unfortunately I have already dove down that part of the pool; and now just trying to tread water...

Thanks.

That's the one. Grab a beer and some popcorn before reading through that long thread...amazing how quickly we all decided to "forget" the past. It feels like we're all still full speed ahead, although, admittedly, I still have reservations with a few Auction Houses since this thread went viral.

Thanks a lot David and Derek.

I will have to get a case of beer, put on some smooth music, and partake in reading the entire thread one day....
