Default Item from Dr. Bill McAvoy

A few years ago, I purchased the following item (see below) from a gentleman who worked with Omaha-area collector Dr. Bill McAvoy. He worked with Dr. McAvoy at card shows around the country. He said he purchased this item from Dr. McAvoy 12+ years ago. I believe some of you knew Dr. McAvoy. This is a shot in the dark but I was wondering if anyone had any knowledge of this item.

I do not plan to take out the cards; however, I'll be honest that I am very curious about it as well. Any insight would be appreciated.

Heard many stories from Omaha area collectors concerning the foot doctor. From what I gathered from them you paid a premium for this item. Nice find by the way!

I had to return stuff to him a day later after finding out it was altered at the National. He pitched a stink about it until I threaten doing a charge back on CC. Your item looks good, and presents well. That looks like a 10k display you got there. It would be interesting to see what back is on your nicely centered T206 Cobb. Roger Neufelt I always liked and found him to be really fair who also was from that area, as I recall.

The good Doctor build quite a little card Bz after his retierment from his practice. Had a stellar vintage inventory but little prewar. First time I asked to see any prewar he may have he gave me a sideways look and handed me off to one of his helpers. Even know I got to see his operation making deals buying/selling many times, I never choose to deal with his tables at shows. Prices were always very high but he had the goods.

Nice looking Cobb display.

Nice display. I think it would definitely be worth taking it to a framer to have them open up the back. At a minimum get a picture and have them repaper it - or go a step further and have them put glass on the back so you can always see the backs of the cards. Neither should cost all that much.

Beautiful piece, can you tell how the items were mounted? I have both been happy when buying framed pieces, but really gotten burned too. Curious as I can't tell from the photo.

Boy, that is old school! Nobody would throw those items together like that today.

I've never opened up the back but was told that their is a pinhead size gel holding the items to the backing if I understood it correctly. I had heard of McAvoy so I trusted its legitimacy.

That's a great idea, to put glass on the back. As long as it could be done with not causing any damage to the cards.
I never dealt with Dr. Mcavoy at any shows, but did do mail order business with him. He was a good source for some harder to get Post Cereal issues. His prices were a little high, but he did have the good stuff.
