Default What was your favorite pickup in '09?

Seems like a good time for a year-in-review thread.

I was extremely fortunate to add a lot of nice cards to my collection during the past 11-plus months. I think this one is my favorite not only because of the card itself but because I bought it in person at the National. No auction. No staying up until 3 a.m. to see if a bid holds up. No worrying about shilling and the like. No "great guys." There's something to be said about holding a card (or slab, in this case) in your hand, looking the seller in the eye and attempting to reach a deal.

Here's hoping '09 was good to you.

Default Fortunate this year as well.

Timely post, Rob.

I also feel very fortunate to have added a number of nice cards to my collection over the past year, not least of which is the Birmingham for which remain in your debt. My favorite of the year, though, is the Donlin from REA.

While I haven't been to a show in many years, I vividly remember the feeling you just described and plan to get back to the National in '10.

I have acquired quite a few vintage BB related items that I could post here. But, my favorite is this unopened
American Beauty pack, since I have been searching for one for several years. I opened it to find the original 10
cigarettes in it.....but, no card.

Rob,
Your story about buying a card from a dealer, at a table, at the National (or any other show) almost made change my mind about my favorite '09 pickup...almost. This REA pickup makes everything else in my collection seem expendable.

Default T206 Johnson Auto (PSA/DNA)

2009 was a good year for adding HOFers to my signed T206 collection, including Sam Crawford (batting), Fred Clarke (batting) and this one....

Default mine wasn't a single card, but a good tip from a board member

Trae put me in contact with someone who had acquired a large group of t206s, among them were 29 with McCormick's stamp. They had contacted Trae through his website to see if he knew anything about them, he contacted me, and they ended up in Omaha. And the board ended up with another contributing member.

Default I like 'em big...

I like larger sized items like Police Gazette supplements, La Presse rotos, Blum's Bulletins, etc. I think my favorite pick up this past year may be this page from the NY Times in 1910. If anybody has the American League, I'm interested in buying it.

Doug

PS - I tried a few things to get those scans to line up, but had no success.

Default T206 sl

I have had a great time trying to put this set together this year. I am putting a low grade set together with the intent to upgrade later. I still need 8 more to complete. Planned on having set completed but 2 of my kids (their adults but kids to me) lost there jobs here in Southern Michigan due to the car industry cutback so I had to put this on hold to help them out. I didn't realize that i'd bought so much this year 'til i sat down to think of which is my favorite.
I do love my T5 Lapp, the E92 schmidt Dockman and E101 Davis combo which
together make that great old photograph, the Dimaggio rookie, the Turkey Red pack---choose Barry---it's gotta be the Tolstoi pack!

I bought an awful lot of nice cards this past year and made inroads in to that E94 master set (thanks Jon C. for the olive Cicotte today) but beyond a doubt this was my best pick-up. Not a single one available in the whole darn State, I had to drive to Poteau, Oklahoma to a WalMart and found the last one. They are the hottest item for kids this year and are selling for two and three times their price on ebay and being snatched up. My granddaughter will be thrilled when Santa brings this Christmas Eve

Default My Bender Collection !!

This is the first year I stepped outside of T206 and T205 pre WWI and focused on Chief Bender. The cards and knowlege of members on this board are unreal. I had no idea so many issues were out there and look forward to future additions. This is the cornerstone of my Bender collection along with the nice Turkey Red I picked up in the spring- My Kotton Bender I picked up from Leons website !

Nah. Can't have everything. Too much great stuff out there. I was taking a nap when the BG Chase auction ended. Had failed to notice that Legendary auctions were closing separately otherwise I'd have run it up although I believe I would have chickensh!tted out before JL. I am glad he has it in his collection instead of some "dush".

Picked up the final 4 cards in a set I've been chasing for 20 years. No other pick-ups mattered after that (Good thing, too, considering the price!)

Haven't all the great cards ended up in the hands of a great guy at one point or another? After all, if they don't have the cards in their hands how can they profit from shill bidding or other fraud?
