How did everyone do in the first installment of Mastro's Auction last night? I went hard after only one item, Cameo pepsin - Jesse Burkett but ended up the underbidder as I do many times on these types of pieces.

Oh-for-five, including 32nd runner-up on the T210 Jackson. Intend to hit a bit harder tonight.

I lost out on the 1915 Cracker Jack Joe Jackson SGC 50. Whoever won that card, still got a great deal. Maybe next time.

Prices seemed strong to me on the lots I was following - outbid on all.

We were tracking a number of lots, and were surprised that the prices
realized on the ultra high Kalamazoo Bat and Lone Jack were so low.

Very early in the day, we spoke with a leading 19th century collector who
indicated that he was quite certain that the K Bat would reach 20K
and the Lone Jack 15K-

We suspect the consignor(s) are quite disappointed.

The Lone Jack had somewhat of a light photo as is common for the series. The plastic grade doesn't matter to many/most 19th Century collectors. The Kbats 84 was really nice but was still a common. The lower grade Kbats looked just as nice, to me. I didn't go hard after anything. I thought the prices were about right but maybe a tad low. That being said there were quite a few strong prices too. I watched the T210 Jackson for several of the extended bids and then went to sleep. Those 2 bidders were just not nice to each other.....I mean incremental bids every 27 minutes got me sleepy....Good luck to all tonight except if you are going after things I am .....best regards

In my opinion 19th collectors do not worry as much about the numerical grade as 20th century collectors and worry more about the image and rarity. I believe the KBats that were offered were not as rare as others and that is why we didn't see them go higher. What a perfect opportunity for astute collectors to grab high grade cards before the 19th century collectors realize just how important they are? I assume that the Dorkind group took advantage of this opportunity, congrats.

Quan,

I put my initial bid around $3,000 or $3,500. I was waiting to put a bid at $7,500, but by the time I got home, it was already at $8,000. I wasn't able to go to $8,500. Maybe next time.

Tony

We were 0 for 4 on items. Whilst we missed out on several nice lots, prices seemed across the board, tough to classify all items as "strong" or "week."
We look forward to the next online auction.

Seriously, is there any better feeling than buying a card, and then about a month later watching a higher-graded card (and the highest graded, for what that's worth) sell for 27 percent less?

I don't think so. It's freaking great.

Rob,

Look at it this way, $400+ is worth it to be able to say Lichtman is "following" your collecting habits.

To be fair, there is a crease on mine, so I have no complaints on the grade. Really, I have no complaints all around, because I was/am very happy to have picked one up.

It just stinks that now Jeff has one, too.

Jeff,

Like the new avatar. By the way, you know that some people don't classify this as a "card", right? I mean, it is a postcard.

I could understand if it is your new favorite.

just don't say I didn't give you first dibs on one of your old favorites.

And Jim, I hadn't noticed that I had changed my avatar. I usually just have my favorite image in there. Oh, look what it is...wow.

PS Joe: you will always have first dibs on my favorite card (in any trade for my new favorite card) happy.gif

I think I began seeing the light when they implemented that super-secure log in mechanism to prevent fraud. That's what did it for me.

Cards are like heroin to you, aren't they? You'd buy from Broadway Rick AND GIZMO on a regular basis if they had the "stuff" you needed. (Pssst! Hey mister. Watcha holding?)

By the way, did I mention that is a great looking card, seriously?

Hey Guys, I thought the above card in the Mastro auction went for a light price. It is not a major set but is a Ruth and is 1 of 1. Does anyone else have any thoughts about this lot. signed fessgreg

We thought that the Mastro Auction that closed this evening had a wonderful collection
of ultra high grade type cards- and some very eye-catching memorabilia.

We had some computer problems as we were frozen out (both evenings)
during the last minute and half of bidding.

We only won one lot

We would love to know who won (if they care to share)
Love to know who won:

1) K Bat SGC 84
2) Lone Jack SGC 84
3) Clements Bread PSA 5
4) Bishop E 99 SGC 60
5) Negro League Hilldale ticket
6) Brooklyn Dodger pennant

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

I ended up with the OJ Rusie! After bidding on several of them the past year I am very happy to have this one - it's not the best of the bunch, but it's not the worst either.
