Default N172 Players League

Posted By: fkw

I tried to look up old posts but couldnt find the info I wanted

How do you know if your card is a "Player League" card.

I have a Dell Darling and I googled a few other images and found a few with the same picture but they said "Chicago" mine says "Chicagos" does it also have to say "PL" to be Players League card?

Thanks in advance, Frank

Old Judge book would be best to weigh in on this one. Most of the confirmed Player's League cards I've seen have had the PL designation but I'd bet there are Player's League cards without it. Jay? Joe? Richard?

Sometimes the "PL" is so light it's almost impossible to see. Some knowledge is needed in this area.

I remember that there are some PL cards without the designation on them...I think Comisky comes to mind...but the OJ book guys, or dedicated OJ collectors, are the ones to ask...

It is pretty simple, either it says PL in typed or hand drawn script (etched into the photo negative) or it is a team designation which was a chnage from 1889 to 1890 which would positively identify the player as being a Players League card (like the previously mentioned Comiskey). 1890 Old Judges can usually be identified by their crappy paper quality but that alone is not going to hold water when dealing with a player who could be 1889 NL or 1890 PL card with no other designation. In these scenarios collectors usually assume the 1889 and hold no premium to it. So basically what Leon said is right, if it does not say PL or contain a player/team combo which absolutely makes it a Players League card, than it is not one.

Not much for me to add except that Comiskey comes both ways (displaying "(PL)" in the image area or without a "(PL)" visible). Obviously, the only year he played with Chicago during the Old Judge period was 1890 so it is a Players League card. In general, the "(PL)" in the image area can either appear as black or white writing. White is more common and can be difficult to see if the photo quality is particularily poor.
