Here you go guys, a couple scans of the Cobb auto. I got this out of East Tenn in the early 1990's. Let me know what you think, or if any of you have seen this one before. If I remember correctly, I traded a beat up 1956 set for it that I had about $700-800 in. I think it may have been displayed as a cut auto due to the discoloration on the rear? The research that I have done seems to look like a real Cobb auto, but this is the only pencil auto I have ever found.
Thoughts, values, auction house worthy?
Thanks to all

Here is a graded one with a date on it to compare. To me there would be some doubt whether or not yours would come back as real or not.

If Cobb dated both of them then the slash/dash discrepancy is telling.

And the number "4" is different.

Sorry, I don't even think it's close. I'm not sure if I have ever seen a Cobb sig. in pencil.
I would bet the house it's a forgery.

I could almost see it being an authentic signature, with the date added by a different hand. Kinda like when I date foul balls and BP homeruns when I take my kids to see MLB games. There are a couple of autographs on the balls, but it's always my handwriting on the date.

I definitely don't like how the top of "T" looks. I have a check and a letter, they don't look like yours.

Agree with Joe... The top part of the "T" is never flat. It is always curved, like an inverted "U". This one looks highly questionable.

No one signs on a yearly, monthly or even daily basis. If I were famous, it would suck for the authenticator because I sign in hundreds of different ways. I'm sure ball players do the same thing.

Who would be the company of choice to take a look at this for me?
I have been uneasy about this one since I bought it, but the story was good and the handfull of Cobb cards that I pulled from the same place, gave it some legs. The guy claimed that his father was a friend of Cobb, at one time. Blah, blah, blah.
Anyway, thanks to all of you for the input. This is more information than I have been able to gather in the past 15 years!

I have read somewhere that at the time of Cobbs death he owned $10 million in G.E. stock and close to $2 million in Coke . He had HUGE business sense ! $6000 in cash might not have been a big problem .

Tom...
I believe you are correct, regarding Dave's check. It appears that only the bottom signature portion is done in Cobb's hand.

Sampson...
Regarding authentication, either James Spence or PSA/DNA would be the two most popular choices (and probably carry the most weight).

Wow - I for one think the autograph is real. Ty Cobb LIKED to sign in green ink (favorite color, money) but was known to sign in pencil -

The top of the T looks a lot like the one I've seen, also on the auto I've seen he used dashes instead of slashes for the date...

I KNOW the Ty Cobb auto I've seen is real because my Mom's ex-boyfriend got his autographed in 1959 in Oregon at one of his Little league exhibition games. There he met Ty Cobb in Person.

Not the best looking autograph, but it's still worth getting authenticated - I'm going gainst the grain to say, looks real to me!

Hey, what's $6k to a millionaire that likes to have fun? Cobb did make a fortune with Coca-Cola, not sure about General Electric... My check stamp on back: "Pay to the Order of Harold's Club
Working Fund". Harold's Club in Reno was the largest casino in Nevada, 1000+ employees, the first to hire women as dealers, and never closed!!

I have no idea about the authenticity of the Cobb auto but would like to point out a couple of my observations:

-The use of dashes instead of slashes in the date does not necessarily mean anything. I alternate back and forth, especially if confined by space like on the back of a small card. On the other hand I have never seen another Cobb with dashes that I can recall.

-The different T's on the signed check are not necessarily from a different hand. The T I use when signing my last name looks like a backwards C. When writing a capitalized T as in the word Thousand, I will usually use a printed T. I am guessing Cobb had a similar flare for signing his own name.

Like I said, no idea on the authenticity, autos can be tough to determine.
