Default Anyone ever get shot at a baseball game before?

Like Rodney used to say "tough crowd"....

https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/...white-sox-game

bigger question:

how does a gun get into the Stadium?

They better review the footage of them going through the security lines and fire whoever let them pass through.

Although in the article it does say they don't know if the shots came from inside or outside the park. Crazy regardless.

I think someone got shot outside a Dodgers game some years ago, but I don't remember hearing about a shooting inside a stadium before.

Low key best part of the article:

Quote:
A postgame concert featuring Vanilla Ice, Rob Base and Tone Loc was canceled because of "technical issues," according to the team.

Sadly, no this is not the first time someone was shot at a baseball game. Someone was shot and killed in the 1950s at the Polo Grounds:

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/04/s...o-grounds.html

But it was a stray bullet some kid shot for fun from Coogan's Bluff, the high ground outside the stadium.

I recall an article about a 1910's game in the PCL with a discharged firearm being posted somewhere (maybe here, I think it was more of a celebratory discharge than an intent to harm) but I can't find it looking for it.

Must be an interesting story here of what actually happened; the sports leagues are pretty stringent with the entrance protocols to prevent even legal and responsible carry. I'm not sure how one could get one through the gates.

Not to derail the thread, but it reminded me of a guy I played softball with a bunch of years ago:

He laced a hit and was flying around the bases when he suddenly tumbled into the dirt while rounding second and screamed, "I've been shot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Completely and utterly startled, everyone (both teams, girlfriends in the stands, bystanders and umps alike) hit the deck to get out of the line of fire as we searched the surrounding areas for the 'grassy knoll.' We crawled out to 'save' him, but when we got there there was no blood, no holes, nothing. Turns out that he very badly blew out his hamstring (ending up on crutches for a long time), and there was no gunshot. He later said that it popped so loudly and 'hit' him that he absolutely believed he had been gunned down "by one of my enemies."

Talk about a SMH moment!!!

The more shocking part is that not only did play continue and the game finished, but fans fought over the now empty seat.

A photo was published in the paper with the police observing the corpse as the game played on.

It can be found here, but DO NOT click if you are sensitive or don’t wish to see such a thing. https://www.flickr.com/photos/thanat...et/3909877303/

What a strange accident. Taking his friends son to a baseball game, and then bam, dead because some dumbass kid was playing with something he shouldn’t. That’s so sad.

Imagine all the faux outraged, shopworn speeches from politicians if it happened today.

Love it

Great scene from an entertaining movie.

And that movie would never be made today.

I used to ride the subway to Mets and, to a far lesser extent, Yankees games. Did that more recently and, regrettably, I think you could pretty easily find a way to get shot on one of trains going home after a night game. It doesn't count as being shot at the game itself, but perhaps close enough for horseshoes and hand grenades.

Apparently, one of the 'victims' is the individual who brought the gun. It was an accidental discharge (I believe the media is simply using the wrong term; the odds there was a truly accidental discharge - a mechanical failure of the gun - is near zero, it's almost certainly a negligent discharge by an idiot) and they got it past security by hiding it in their obese fat folds.

If true I still don't really understand how one can be so obese that the large amount of steel in the slide and barrel plus the frame supporting pieces and ammunition do not trigger the detector. If I made $15 an hour to wand people I wouldn't want to explore their fat folds either, I guess.

Wasn't that Alec Baldwin's defense?

His really stupid and fundamentally mechanically wrong defense is somehow better than defending this as an AD*. It is, technically, possible to fire an old west single action army revolver if you hit the muzzle or the hammer really, really hard and it is a model built to the original spec instead of the updated spec that has a bar that stops the hammer without a trigger press. It's pretty much impossible for any handgun in any kind of common use today to discharge without a trigger pull, even if one of the parts breaks.

That the shooter was so stupid that they were using their fat as a holster should be enough to tell us a negligent discharge is much more likely even if this was a mechanical danger
