I got that email too. First thing that came to mind was the PSA 8 T206 Wagner.

Stuff has sold for more than the Wagner. There was a Ruth jersey as I recall in SCP Auctions. Also Naismith's original rules. I would guess it's the Ruth jersey.

I doubt there would ever be a general consensus among collectors what the most historical piece of sports memorabilia piece is.

Maybe they're selling the New York Yankees franchise?

More than $3M?

I don't recall anything like that, please enlighten me.

My guess is that the Player's League documents coming up in the fall Memory Lane auction are more significant.

Recall last year Goldin was on TV talking up something else as being the greatest most amazing stupendous item that ever saw the light of an auction floor. Obamas first State of the Union address I think.

While they are unique (Saw them at the National) I am not sure they will have the mass appeal of whatever Goldin is offering.

If one takes "most historically significant" seriously it suggests to me something relating to Jackie Robinson, Jesse Owens, or perhaps the birth of a major sport.

SCP sold a Ruth jersey for $4.4 million a few years back
http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/7...ord-44-million

Based on the wording I don't think this would be a card.

It seems like it would have to be linked to both a player (or possibly a person who is not an athlete) and an event that has great significance.

For the player to matter enough they would have to be transcendent, so there's not a huge list:

Ruth, Gehrig, Jackie Robinson and maybe a couple others in baseball, Jordan in basketball (don't think anyone else comes close), don't think anyone in football or hockey is there. Boxing has Ali. Not sure anyone in golf matters that much. Anyone in the Olympics?

Beyond that there could be non-sports personalities although I can't think of too many options right now. Maybe the golf equipment used on the moon?

If he is saying truthfully it's the most valuable, then it's already sold at least once, and that makes it the Ruth uniform. Otherwise no way to know.

The 1869 Cincinnati Reds sale of their trophy balls, equipment and uniforms after their World Tour would probably disagree with the above statement

Will the book with all the presidents be the 8 figures they are talking about? They are auctioning the baseball signatures separately.

And if I am right about which Jackie Robinson item, I think it likely would attract some wealthy bidders well beyond the usual sports memorabilia crowd and that may be why Ken is predicting such a high number.

I know people have hyped the 1946/1947 Contracts of Robinson because non like most American Documents (ie Emancipation Proclomation, Constitution) there is only one. It still is hard to believe, though, that it would sell more than George Washington's personal, annotated, copy of the Constitution, the proposed Bill of Rights and acts of the first Congress which set a record for an American document when it sold in 2012 through Christies (Sold for 9.8 Million).

I would be interested to see where the 1946/1947 Contracts of Robinson ended up none the less and I would still watch the auction with anticipation.

In the article I posted there were holes in the provenance -- two anonymous links in the chain of custody. It will be interesting to see -- assuming I am guessing right about the item -- if Ken can plug those. Or whether authenticity will be based primarily on the document itself.

Great items but not even close to 10 million, as I stated earlier. Not the first or last time he will go out on a limb and make a fool of himself but it has obviously not hurt his ability to bring in some great consignments.

I will be a bit surprised if these don't get $10,000,000. It's two of the most important documents in the history of the United States.

For reference, or not, a 1949 Jackie contract sold earlier this year for 275K or so.
