Auction preview just went up. Minimum opening bid on the Jackie contract is $15 million, which is $18 million with the juice.

Wonder if that's just for attention and will come lower before the auction actually goes live.

In my opinion it is a ridiculous price. I also think that it makes the auction house look silly.

It is the last item in the auction. If they were serious they would list it first.

This was an error on our company's part. The item was placed there as a place holder as was the price as well. There is no price on this item and is not available at the shown price. This was supposed to be a preview for an upcoming auction. There is no opening bid nor has any price been set. Please accept my apology for any misunderstandings.

That makes sense, since your website says that the contract is to be auctioned on Dec. 6.

Whatever happened to this? Is it up for auction now or being auctioned later this month? I didn't see it in Goldin's current auction.

It's listed as the final item in this auction. but no bids are being taken. It will be sold in a live auction on Dec. 6.

I find it odd that there was so much initial press and announcement emails, but nothing went out about the date changing, at least that I saw. That, and the fact that the contracts are nowhere to be found on their home page. I literally had to search "Robinson Contract" to find it in the bowels of the website, listed as lot #1913, right after a horrendous oil painting of Aaron Judge.

It is always interesting when Peter Nash weighs in. I guess we'll see how this all plays out. As I read it, the essence of Nash's claim is that the contract was stolen from the Dodgers and was not Robinson's copy.

The auction was last night and, if I read correctly, the contract did not sell. If so, I would think this is a black eye for Goldin.

Well, the most significant item in the history of the world made a brief appearance in an auction in New York City last night.
The contracts garnered a single bid of $15 million but apparently drew a pass, presumably due to a hidden reserve:

I don't think it will have any effect on Goldin Auctions. I would just be interested to know the real story of the contracts.

Tough to comprehend a minimum bid above $15 million. So Goldin spent a lot of money and time promoting the contract and makes no commission, although they do get some publicity.

So it got one bid and still didn't sell? That's interesting. Why even put a reserve on it like that, just make the opening bid what the reserve is.

After Goldin making so much noise over the consignment this thing ended pretty quietly. Saw it coming especially after the 2 auction date changes.

My guess, based on their rules for reserve auctions, is the house had the one and only bid.

I'm a little confused because I am almost sure I got an email a few months back looking for Jackie items for the Jackie auction, and yet it seems like this item was a standalone auction.

Does anyone know if they are planning another auction focused on Jackie or if they will just have a bunch of Jackie items in their next auction...?

I would be shocked if the only bid -- if there indeed was one -- was not Ken's bid or some entity he controls making the bid. No way a real person would bid $15 million and not get it. Onto the next circus for him.

I agree. He now has a price point of $15M in his back pocket for future buyers.

I can't imagine that anyone would fall for that. Though in this hobby anything is possible. No sane person is bidding $15 million for that.

Diamonds are appraised at 3x the price paid at a jeweler.

I don't believe that $15 million bid was real either. If it was then they should have accepted it and it would have been a Goldin success story. Hype a $3 million item for $36 million in order to get $15 million.

Reading the Hauls of Shame article seems like the contract may be stolen property and until that is cleared up anyone that buys it may ending up losing it since you can't convey good title to stolen property... To the lawyers on the board, are we correct about that?

End of the day that contract should end up in Cooperstown or the Smithsonian or back with the Dodgers to permanently "lend" it to one institution or the other or rotate it so everyone can enjoy it...

I have no idea whether Peter Nash is right, but as a general legal proposition, one cannot convey good title to stolen property because title remains with the original owner.

They are extending to fish for buyers to then negotiate the best price. There is no way they can expect 30-36 million on that contract in one open auction. So they are going to fish for serious bidders by setting several spotlight auctions (fake by putting an unreasonable hidden bid to fish out what people will pay for this)..... then they will gather those bidders and hold a private one-on-one negotiation on their own terms to weed out the highest bidder. Its brilliant, finds out what the highest bidder in the market is with giving the owner the option to sell or not. Its a premeditated process to seek price discovery. Brilliant market making on a unique item!

Learned everything I needed to know about the "new" Ken Goldin back when Goldin Auctions started up. In the first, or one of the first, auctions, there were multiple autographed baseball jerseys that were represented as authentic MLB jerseys that were autographed. Every last jersey was a counterfeit - the jersey not necessarily the autograph. I contacted Goldin and was told, essentially, that they were selling the autograph, not the jersey, and they didn't have the time to police whether the jersey was legitimate or not.

Sure thing Kenny. Bootleg material is bootleg material.
