I just got email about a 19th century sports autograph book. I sure hope that's not it. What a let down if it is.

It looked they were area also announcing something tomorrow.

I don't think this could possibly be it since it looks like they are selling the pages of the ballplayers individually (unless I read it wrong.)

Will the book with all the presidents be the 8 figures they are talking about? They are auctioning the baseball signatures separately.

Whatever it is, one thing is for sure: I won't be bidding on it.

It can't possibly be, after what Ken has said about it.

That autograph book looks amazing, but I dont care if you have every 19th century autograph of everyone who ever played the game, you are not getting anywhere close to eight figures. Even the rarest names have come down in the last ten years. An autograph book like that (unless there are multiple books) could hold maybe 100-200 signatures so the math is just not even close. I follow that area of the hobby quite extensively and it just does not generate the prices other stuff does with the exception of maybe 5-10 big names.

REALLY COOL though.

Default What a dissapointment

After all the speculation - THAT is the "8 figure" lot - time will tell. As a couple have already suggested (more of a lay opinion here) - I don't see close to 8 figures - unless of course "figures" refers to 8 presidents living during the time the autograph book is from!

That is definitely not Goldin's 8 figure announcement.

Default I've think I have it!

Rumor is that they found a semi truckload of items that were being sold by Goldin on HSN 20 years ago. They are easily worth 8 figures.

The way Goldin has built this up... claiming it will hit 8 figures... there is no way we will be disappointed. It's going to be something incredible, but I have no idea what

Fact Check: Did Goldin claim it will go for 8 figures, or is that just something said in jest in this thread that has been perpetuated?

I'm more interested in what the Buyers Premium will be as opposed to the item itself. Goldin is going to get a nice chunk of change.

Nothing second hand about it. It is from Goldin himself from the forum thread you quoted earlier.

Sports related could be anything...my first thought was a car. Maybe first Indy 500 or NASCAR winning car?

8 figures? If racing, would most likely be a vintage Ferrari or Porsche from one of the storied races of yesteryear.

If I was the kind of guy who had a spare $10M laying around, I can't think of any sports memorabilia item I'd want to spend it on. Unless it was something with great appreciation potential. Will be curious to see what it is, but sounds like it's going to be the sort of thing that hopefully gets displayed in a museum by the new owner.

That's what I was thinking. For $10M I'd rather own a Monet, but who knows....there's probably more than one billionaire out there who is sick of looking at of all his Monets.

I bet all the guys who have been passing on auctions for decades are very excited to spend the 10M nest egg they've been saving for that must have piece.

This is what I was thinking, except a building. Maybe a childhood home, museum, or old stadium/arena.

If it's what I think it is, see prior post and link, and the provenance is solid, then I do think it's going to go very high. I think it potentially could attract people who don't normally buy sports memorabilia as it has a broader historical import. Whether it goes as high as Ken is predicting, remains to be seen.

Maybe it's the Mets franchise? I guess if you have 2 or 3 bidders who really want the team, it could hit 8 figures.

If one takes "most historically significant" seriously it suggests to me something relating to Jackie Robinson, Jesse Owens, or perhaps the birth of a major sport.

Nothing Jesse Owens would even plausibly go that high IMO.

Plus one of his 1936 gold medals sold in 2013. And I guess heritage is supposed to have another 2 for sale eventually.

And if I am right about which Jackie Robinson item, I think it likely would attract some wealthy bidders well beyond the usual sports memorabilia crowd and that may be why Ken is predicting such a high number.

I know people have hyped the 1946/1947 Contracts of Robinson because non like most American Documents (ie Emancipation Proclomation, Constitution) there is only one. It still is hard to believe, though, that it would sell more than George Washington's personal, annotated, copy of the Constitution, the proposed Bill of Rights and acts of the first Congress which set a record for an American document when it sold in 2012 through Christies (Sold for 9.8 Million).

I would be interested to see where the 1946/1947 Contracts of Robinson ended up none the less and I would still watch the auction with anticipation.

In the article I posted there were holes in the provenance -- two anonymous links in the chain of custody. It will be interesting to see -- assuming I am guessing right about the item -- if Ken can plug those. Or whether authenticity will be based primarily on the document itself.

A 250 Testa Rossa sold for 16 million in 2011.

So much for the "first sports related collectible to sell for 8 figures"

Well, if we distill down these 20 pages, seems like many of us keep circling back to the same few (historic) pieces related to Jackie Robinson, and his MLB debut (contract, uniform, etc). I guess we'll find out soon.
