Default What do you love about T206s?

With so many different ways to collect t206s.... For all you t206 fans...I'm wondering...

#1 What drew you into the set in the 1st place... Why start collecting t206s..
#2 Do you remember your 1st t206 card.. What was it?
#3 Which t206s are you currently collecting... (Back set, southern leaguers, 520 set, HOFers, team set..etc)
#4 What t206s are on the top of your want list

Here's my answers..
#1 the history behind the monster intreagued me...trying to get to 520 seemed like a fun journey to take...at first it seemed like an impossible task.. But if you start to chip away.. You realize its possible..
#2 my first t206 was o'hara st louis ...thought I'd go for one of the harder 520s and get it outta the way
#3 currently I'm going for the seymour throwing back set(trying to get all the different backs available for the same front pose)
#4 my top want list is a black lenox seymour throwing and drum back seymour throwing

Default T206 Story

#1 What drew you into the set in the 1st place...
#2 Do you remember your 1st t206 card..
#3 Which t206s are you currently collecting...
#4 What t206s are on the top of your want list...

Ok,
#1 I started the T206 HOF set for the players involved. One of my collection focuses is on 8 early HOFers (Matty, Cy, Mordecai, Eddie Collins, Jimmy Collins, Chance, Lajoie and Speaker). The T206 set had all 8, which can be said for only a few sets (that I can afford). This 8 player undertaking branched into the complete HOF set.
#2 My first T206 was a Lajoie Throwing (still my nicest T206 as I purchased it years before the rest)
#3 I am working on a back set of the superprint Chance Yellow portrait, a back set on the Merkle throwing and upgrading my Matty cards. Still pecking away at the HOF set, now over 45 different players.
#4 My top want list is semi-rare backs for Chance Yellow (i.e. AB, EPDG, CB--not ready to tackle the biggies yet).

Good luck all with your finds,
Dave H

#1 What drew you into the set in the 1st place... Why start collecting t206s..

Honestly, before I joined Net54 I did not own one T206. The combination of the knowledge I picked up on here as well as all the nuances within the set drew me to collecting it in some fashion.

#2 Do you remember your 1st t206 card.. What was it?

I don't, but I know I no longer have it! I was at about 15% when I sold them off to focus on one back in particular.

#3 Which t206s are you currently collecting... (Back set, southern leaguers, 520 set, HOFers, team set..etc)

Tolstoi back set

#4 What t206s are on the top of your want list

Tolstoi Ty Cobb Red Portrait

It's hard to choose a favorite - it changes from day to day - but this is definitely my best one:

Ed Abbaticchio Blue Sleeves PSA 4MC

I'm going to spend the rest of my life attempting to complete the 522 set, alphabetically, in PSA 4 condition.

#4 What t206s are on the top of your want list

Right now, I need Jack Bastian in PSA 4.

Default Love the T206's ...

Reason #1 : The T206 set contains 4 of the 5 first HOF inductees - Monumental ! No other pre-T206 era player made it in on the very first vote.

Reason #2 : The drawings and colors are superb.

I'd tend to agree about the image quality. In terms of colors and quality, the set is really unparalleled. That said, the back advertisements are really interesting as well.

My first were mathewson and young (portraits) both ungraded from 1996, in ex-mt condition. To this day, i have still not gotten them graded. My favorites to collect are psa high grades with qualifiers. You get so much more card for your money, and i am still actively seeking them.

#1 What drew you into the set in the 1st place... Why start collecting t206s..

I like to shop. With T206, I can find a low grade example in my budget almost any day I want to. I also love all the different backs. Most of the time I find myself getting a new card in the mail and turning it straight over to the back. On several of my cards I appreciate the back more than the front.

#2 Do you remember your 1st t206 card.. What was it?

Mine was a low grade Bob Ewing I bought at a show in 2008 for $20.

#3 Which t206s are you currently collecting... (Back set, southern leaguers, 520 set, HOFers, team set..etc)

I'm working on a 520 card set, but I have a long way to go. I'm trying to keep a representative sample of all the semi-tough backs.

#4 What t206s are on the top of your want list

I guess a Red Cobb or a Johnson, but I still need so many cards that I'm in no hurry to get any one.

For me after reading the "Glory Of Their Times" and seeing the Rube Marquard T206, I became interested in the set.

Mathewson Dark Cap

1. What drew me into the set in the first place? At first, I was type collecting, picking up E92's, T205's, T206's, E90-1's,etc,etc, and for some reason I just loved the T206's way more than the rest. So I decided to trade off everything else to focus on T206.

2. Do I still remember my first T206? Yes, still have it- Bill Hallman SGC 50 (pictured below)

3. Which T206's am I currently collecting? Anything and everything that I need and don't have. I'm trying to stay in the V/G to V/G-E/X range. I probably have the least focus-meaning I need so many (going for as much of the set as possible) that it boils down to what I can afford at the time. A common is just fine with me

4. What T206's are at the top of my want list? More HOF'ers that I don't have, need some of the harder backs-shoot-I need so many one is as good as another at this point. My want list will become more detailed as I approach the 400 mark (which will be a long time from now at this pace).

I have the fronts of my T206's on my profile page if anyone is interested. Cool thread !!!

Sincerely, Clayton

#1 What drew you into the set in the 1st place... Why start collecting t206s..

My local dealer showed me a John McGraw hands at hip, while I was in there with my kids buying THEM cards. It reminded me that my Grandfather had once given me a poor condition Browne T206. I was hooked after about 5 seconds.

#2 Do you remember your 1st t206 card.. What was it?

It was the Browne, probably Chicago. I stupidly traded it 30 years ago and just recently righted the universe by purchasing one in much better condition.

#3 Which t206s are you currently collecting... (Back set, southern leaguers, 520 set, HOFers, team set..etc)

Definitely the HOFers, but also NY Giants and Yankees, and Black Sox. I am also interested in the players that have a connection to Ruth such as Carrigan and Warhop, etc.

#4 What t206s are on the top of your want list.

#1 is a Walter Johnson pitching in about a 3 grade. After that, Keeler with bat.

#1 No doubt I would not be collecting t206 if not for this board. So much discussion about t206. So many books, articles, research on the set. So many people collecting, makes me feel like part of a fraternity. I also like Robert's response. I like to shop. Plus, I'm pretty sure I can buy a group, or upgrade a card, and be able to sell my doubles pretty quickly.

#2 My first t206 was Downey Fielding got it back in the day, don't even remember when, just so I could say I had one. 2nd t206 was a Matty Dark cap purchased last summer while reading "The Celebrant" a great book recommended by this board.

#3 Recently finished the HOFers (minus 2).....now just going for one of each card. I'm approaching 50% in low grade. Mostly fair, good,vg.

#4 Now that I've completed the HOFers, I have no particular want list. Just trying to resist the urge to sprint and staying within my $$ guidelines.

#1 What drew you into the set in the 1st place... Why start collecting t206s..

What didn't draw me in? The selection of players, artwork, back variations, and the era of baseball's history depicted during the set's production are all factors.

#2 Do you remember your 1st t206 card.. What was it?

Johnny Bates.

#3 Which t206s are you currently collecting... (Back set, southern leaguers, 520 set, HOFers, team set..etc)

I'm going for a 520 card set.

#4 What t206s are on the top of your want list

My top 5:

5. Evers and Chance
4. Ed Cicotte
3. Tris Speaker
2. Christy Mathewson (black cap)
1. Walter Johnson (portrait)

1. What drew you into the set in the first place?

I had always enjoyed reading baseball history and was very interested in the period because of the link between my home town and that era. I lived with my elderly grandparents and a great-uncle from 1954-60. They were in their teens and 20s when most of the major league teams trained here so they saw many of these players and loved to talk about them.

2. Do you remember your first T206 card?

I bought 50 different from George Lyons in 1976 and was off and running until my mental melt down 20 years ago when I sold my near set!

3. Which T206s are you currently collecting?

As many different fronts as I can pick up! Don;t rule out the big boys, there is always the lottery.

4. What T206 is at the top of your want list?

I just try to find any raw card that I don't have. Same goes for my T205s.

4.

#1 What drew you into the set in the 1st place?
All of the above. History, artwork, availability etc.

#2 Do you remember your 1st t206 card? What was it?
Matty Black Cap purchased raw when I was a vintage newbie. SGC gave it a 40. Still have it.

#3 Which t206s are you currently collecting?
The monster wanted me to quit and I listened. Currently working on a NY Giants subset 34/51, rudimentary backs set - need most of the toughies, any card which is singularly beautiful, e.g., Walsh, Revelle, the Cobbs, etc.

#4 What t206s are on the top of your want list?
Am slowly picking away at the Giants I need, I'd like to add a Uzit, Drum or Lenox back in the foreseeable future, and I'd like to upgrade my Matty White Cap and my Dutch Revelle, two of my favorite T206s, to a top condition, clean, sharp and centered, just to see them in their original glory.

#5 What is the best T206 in your collection?

(Hi David!)

#1 What drew you into the set in the 1st place... Why start collecting t206s..

I saw some old "tobacco cards" at a small mall show (Trolley Station) in Bethlehem, PA in 1993. i had never seen them before, and had no idea what i was looking at. they were mesmerizing! i'll never forget that first time when i held them in my hands. felt like i was holding some very historical artifacts, very delicate, beautiful, rich with history.

#2 Do you remember your 1st t206 card.. What was it?

Devlin, Elberfeld- Port., Kroh...

#3 Which t206s are you currently collecting... (Back set, southern leaguers, 520 set, HOFers, team set..etc)

I collected the monster for about 15 years. i collected it all, rare backs, high grade, printing freaks, rare variations, etc, etc...i abruptly switched to memorabilia a few years ago..but, i'm getting the "itch" again.

#4 What t206s are on the top of your want list

maybe a nice southern league sub-set?...not sure.

#1 What drew you into the set in the 1st place... Why start collecting t206s..

The history of the players of the era. I find it the most character and story rich era in Baseball.

#2 Do you remember your 1st t206 card.. What was it?

Tris Speaker in VG condition bought from a coin store for a very fair price.

#3 Which t206s are you currently collecting... (Back set, southern leaguers, 520 set, HOFers, team set..etc)

Collecting Joe Doyles with all the backs available. I have all except for one (Tolstoi) and am looking to upgrade some of them when the opportunity presents itself for a fair deal.

#4 What t206s are on the top of your want list

My #1 want by far....a Joe Doyle with a Tolstoi back in any condition. Also would like to upgrade my Sovereign Doyle and possibly my El Principe Dolye. It is an EX++ front with a reverse that has paste residue and staining. As a final thought... I have posted my buy prices for a Doyle Tolstoi that are in-line with what a Walter Johnson portrat would sell for in the various grades and not had any takers. A tough one for sure.

#1 What drew you into the set in the 1st place... Why start collecting t206s..

For the most part, the Wagner...No, not that I ever thought I'd get one, but what's the next best thing? Of course, the cards that were produced with it.
I'd originally just wanted one, then another, then another...The set sucked me in, and then studying up on the players, history and other information about the set, I was stuck.

#2 Do you remember your 1st t206 card.. What was it?

Krause, Philla pitching, in pretty rough shape on the bay for under $10.

#3 Which t206s are you currently collecting... (Back set, southern leaguers, 520 set, HOFers, team set..etc)

My collecting focuses vary. I find myself jumping all over the place from HOF rookies, pre-war HOFers(goal is at least one from each set), Vitcorian trade cards(usually fun and cheap), all standard topps sets(It's fun to slowly piece these together), and of course autographs, based on my given mood. I've clearly got attention issues...Anyways, I always keep an eye on the t206's, if I come across an affordable one that I don't have, I generally pick it up. Under $10-15 and I'm usually good to go, I'm not very condition sensitive either, and plan upgrading the really bad ones when the time comes. One of at least each back would be nice as well, but I'm not at the point in this collection yet, where I'm really focused on that yet.. A team set of the Cleveland players would probably be my short-term goal.

#4 What t206s are on the top of your want list
Nothing for certain, just a hope that affordable low grade ones keep popping up. Right now, I don't see a complete set in the near future, nor would I say it's a goal. I'm primarily focused on compiling at the moment, in hopes that one day I'll realize I'm close enough to really give it my full attention. For the record, I'm only at 28 including 3 HOFers in Clarke, Davis and Flick.

#1 What drew you into the set in the 1st place... Why start collecting t206s..

When I decided to shift my collecting focus to vintage cards T206's were easy to gravitate to due to the sets history, size, and availability.

#2 Do you remember your 1st t206 card.. What was it?

Rube Marquard - Pitching

#3 Which t206s are you currently collecting... (Back set, southern leaguers, 520 set, HOFers, team set..etc)

My main focuses are my Boston National Super set and the Sweet Caporal Factory 649 set.

#1 What drew you into the set in the 1st place... Why start collecting t206s..

I took in a White Cap Matty on trade for a Clemente RC back in 93. I enjoy history and did the research on the player and card and got hooked on the era. T206's are cost effective and easy to find, so it was the best place to play.

#2 Do you remember your 1st t206 card.. What was it?

White Cap Matty with an Old Mill back

#3 Which t206s are you currently collecting... (Back set, southern leaguers, 520 set, HOFers, team set..etc)

Kind of in a holding pattern until the $$ gets ironed out. I am sitting on 22HOFers with 17 different backs and 11 Eddie Collins with 9 different backs.

Eddie Collins - American Beauty (That will put me at 10 of 10 combos known) Horner Cab will be next.

1. I've known about the set since I was a kid. I just decided I wanted to put together the set and it went from there. I also like the availability of the cards.
2. Red Murray Batting SGC 30 American Beauty 350
3. I'm trying to complete HOF'ers and SL'ers but pretty much anything that catches my eye.
4. This year I want a Cobb!

#1 What drew you into the set in the 1st place... Why start collecting t206s..

Steve Clark's "The Complete Book of Baseball Cards"

#2 Do you remember your 1st t206 card.. What was it?

Alperman, Gilbert, Rhodes, Schreck, circa 1981

#3 Which t206s are you currently collecting... (Back set, southern leaguers, 520 set, HOFers, team set..etc)

Would like to get to 522 fronts (no Wags or Doyle error) with at least one of each back type. About 1/2 way there on the fronts, all graded PSA 4 to 7.

#4 What t206s are on the top of your want list

Looking to add Cobb Red and a Carolina Brights common in PSA 5 this year.
