The Chicago Cubs (1870) I'm pretty sure is the oldest continuous baseball team...they predate the phillies by 3 or 4 years. |

We need some clarification here Ted...if it's the oldest continuous team nickname it's the Phillies. If it's the longest continuous franchise it is the Cubs. |

The Phillies never officially changed their nickname. They still had "Phillies" on their uniform through the whole "Blue Jays" name change. |

The White Stocking are the same "Franchise" as the Cubs, it is older than the Phillies. Now if you had said same continuous nickname I would agree that it's the Phillies, but I am certain the NL Chicago franchise is the answer to your original question. |

I will concede that the Pirates have the Phillies beat by one year on longest continuous nickname...but the Phillies never officially changed their name to the Blue Jays. The uniforms always said "Phillies" on them with a blue jay on the sleeve. |

The Phillies trump themselves as the longest running single name, single city team. If I were the Pirates, I would have a beef with this due to the whole Blue Jay formal naming situation, but still keeping the Phillies nick name. Good topic for the SABR guys to rule on officially:>) |
