As the Ol'Perfesser once said ".... you could look it up", but this week an eBay auction closed for a Ty Cobb CJ at $3000. The condition of this card as stated by a major grading company was "rejected, altered".

Twas not so long ago that this condition card was not desireable. I guess that I need to upgrade my understanding.

Similarly, a vg/ex UJ Klein closed above $600. At the onset, I had thoughts of bidding, but as the price passed $300. those thoughts dwindled. At the close there was a shootout among three bidders which resulted in the hammer blow cited above. Now, it was my understanding that Leader Novelty cards demanded a higher price tag than the Uncle Jacks, and that Leader cards typically sold around $300.

What is the story here? Apparently I have missed a few episodes of this soap opera.

What's so unusual about the UJ Klein? Was it the only one graded by PSA/SGC, or just one of two graded? $600 doesn't seem exhorbitant, especially given who the winning bidder was.

King: I have no idea about how many of any card has been graded. I simply was uninformed regarding the value of the cards in this set.

I guess that is not particularly postworthy (as Ms. Bennet might say) since everytime we learn something, most don't celebrate their previous ignorance by telling everyone what a dunderhead they have been.

However, I am curious regarding how the Leader Novelty stacks up against the Uncle Jacks costwise.

As I see this, cmoking, there are four main duotone sets which were issued around 1930. These are:

1929 Leader Novelty
1931 w-517
1933 Uncle Jacks
1934 Batter Up

All of these sets have cards which are issued in multiple duotone colors. There are reasons to prefer each of these sets, however the w517s and Batter Ups are most common, although specific players in those sets can be difficult.

Last time I checked the Leader Novelty and Uncle Jack cards ran about $300 each, w517s and Batter Up <$100. Admittedly, I stay more on top of the more common set prices, because they are really more in my league; but I did not realize how far out of my league the UJ set has become.

Oh it takes a special card to wrench $600 out of me. And a 1933 Chuck Klein just ain't that special (considering all of the other 30s Klein options which exist).

So there you have it. What can you tell me about UJs?

I don't know if he still has them but they are bringing alot of $ these days. I also think Dan Makee has a few in the same price range so with all that being said I do think they are selling at that level or at least being asking at those levels. Hope this helps...

When speaking of these types of sets, the W553 set should also be in the equation for completeness. It is pretty similar in several ways to the Leader Novelty set. Also, the $600 on the Uncle Jack does seem high to me as well, but not outrageous.
