Well for starters, each were outfielders.

Somewhere I have a scorecard that was printed as a movie prop for The Natural. Might have 2 movie prop ball game tickets, too... I can't recall. If I find the scorecard I'll scan and post.

All "appeared" in Play Ball issues?

All "appeared" on the cover of Life Magazine?

Seriously, though, I have no idea. It's an interesting question to which I can't wait to hear the answer.

Ted, you really should do these more often. Feel free to incorporate a ton of classic rock / jazz into the mixture!

In the movie, a newspaper headline is seen to list Ted and Joe as the RBI leaders. Ted wanted to be known as the best hitter who ever lived; Roy wanted to be known as the best ever. Ted was Redford's idol and he wore #9 in the movie and copied his swing.
The homer off the light tower was supposed to be based on a Ted homer (this I read in one of the many baseball books I've had the pleasure to read).

To quote Karen Carpenter...."Close to You"-r answer.......(poor try by me).

Better yet....your "Long Train Running" (Doobie's - 1973) has just switched onto the main track.

Hey John

What's your feeling about Boston being Manny-less ?

All 3 had their careers interrupted, 2 by military duty, 1 by gunshot recovery.

Each had a centennial patch on their 1939 uniform.

I doubt that either is what you were after... will try to think of more.

To complete John's thought, DiMaggio after he retired always demanded to be introduced as the greatest living ballplayer.

Nothing to do with hitting HR's.

Besides, I think Ruth and Mantle have the longest measured HR's.

DiMag had Marilyn, Redford had Demi Moore (Indecent Proposal) and Ted Williams....we don't really know ?

WOW, this is the 1st trivia ? in a while, where I have stumped all the experts on this forum !

Each of the three were known to have said:

"And then when I walked down the street, people would've looked and they would've said there goes Roy Hobbs [Ted Williams][Joe Dimaggio], the best there ever was in this game."

BOB M was 1st....but, the subsequent correct answers came in virtually simultaneously (at 1:45). And, Steve M
pounded the Gavel to cinch it.

Joe DiMaggio was the key....he was given uniform #9 when he came up from the PCL in 1936 (Crosetti wore #5
in 1936).

This is certainly true.....I came in and clicked on the "bottom of page" link when I saw the # of posts had increased,
and never saw his post.

Therefore, MATT is the "Trivia King"....with kudos to JOHN K for being 1st to note the uniform #9 connection.

TED Z

P.S......no more hints in the future.

Hey Ted, Let me answer your question about Manny and the Red Sox.
To make a long soap opera short. Starting in 2009, the club had a two year option that they could pick up Manny for $20 million (each year) should they so choose. Manny signed this contract, agreeing to the 2 year club option (in part) so he could crow about having signed a $20 million contract. At this year's All Star Game, A-Rod was asking Manny how could he be so dumb to allow the Sox to control the situation. Manny then decides to opt out in his own special way: refusing to play against Joba and the Yanks claiming his knee hurt, watching 3 Mariano strikes go by without taking his bat off his shoulder in a key spot, running to first a la Ernie Lombardi, telling his team that he'll see them in Kansas City when there were another 7 games to go until KC. . .etc. So the Sox trade him. Manny's agent (non other than) Scott Boras informs the Sox that Manny will behave (and try!) if the Sox agreed to not pick up his option and allow him to test the free agent waters (cliche, sorry). The Sox say, "No Thanks!" To close, I can't believe the Sox got someone like Jason Bay in return. Pirate fans feel free to weigh in.

I, too, am glad to see him go--his time had come & gone. Any hit in the line-up will be MORE than made up by team enthusiasm.

"Manny's Way" was fast wearing on ALL his team-mates to the point of affecting play. When John Henry had to come out w/ a statement saying he was "personally offended" by Manny's remarks, I knew the end was very near.

Manny is going to get a real come-uppance next year. He wants $100 mil for a 4 year deal. It ain't going to happen. He should have stuck with his 20 mil and been happy. No team in their right mind is going to pay him $25 mil a year for the next 4 years at his age and with his temperament. Not even the Yankees...

I'm a lifelong BoSox fan, and never liked that clown. He was never good for the team from an attitude standpoint. Somebody once told me that Manny lives on the penthouse floor of an expensive Manhattan hotel. Imagine what that monthly rent must be setting him back. I hope he ends up like Spinks someday, cleaning toilets. Hell, he wouldn't even need to buy a johnny-mop; he could just dip his dreadlock-laden follicles into the dirty bowl and flush for all I care! Good riddance!
