Default My 1974 Topps Red Sox team set

I mentioned this project in a couple of pickups threads and Mark suggested I start a new thread for this project, so here it is. I'm working on a complete PSA slabbed team set, combination signed and unsigned. The goal is not to have a complete signed set, but to have a really nice PSA set, with as many certified autos included as possible.

First, here are the signed ones I have so far, in the order I obtained them:

Aparicio was a PSA 9 crackout

Yaz was a PSA 8 crackout

Was a PSA 9 crackout.

And here are the other graded ones I have, in numerical order:

The Evans is a personal favorite. He's one of my 2 favorite players of all time and this is his first solo Topps card. There are no PSA 10's.

Default '1974 Red Sox

Dan,

Sounds like a very interesting and fun project you got going there. The autographed cards look amazing. I really like that you started with such nice looking cards that are signed. The 1974 set is a great looking set! Are you planning to crack out other cards that you currently have and get signed? Also, what are you still looking to pick up? Details, details...

By the way great thread!

It would be great to see a complete signed set too. I have always loved that Fisk card.

Thanks Ian! I saw you got your Furillo set approved, congrats!

Mark, for signed and/or graded cards, I now have 19 for this project. There are 33 or 34 on my checklist, so still a ways to go. There are 4 or so guys that are reliable TTM that I don't have high grade cards for yet. I don't have the list in front of me, but I know one is Danny Cater. Other than that, I'll Continue to buy PSA 9's I need when they're fairly priced and keep my eyes out for private signings. Since I joined SCN I've been able to send to signings for Cooper, aparicio, Bill Lee, Yaz and Cepeda, so hopefully more in the future. It would be awesome to get Evans on his card. My 2nd favorite player's first solo card, in the highest grade possible.... signed. I would treasure that one.

Great stuff Dan. A Fisk 74 Deckle white back was a long time nemesis for me

Bob can be a pain too

Excellent collection. The 74 Bostons look really sharp in the PSA slab. I love how many of these were taken at the Oakland Coliseum too.

More additions today to this project. First, the first new slabbed card I've added to my set in 5 months:

Also bought these autos. I knew when I bought them that the cards probably weren't in good enough shape for this project and they're not. But they'll do as raw placeholders until I have nicer copies.

Bought a PSA 9 Bob Montgomery, cracked it out and he signed it for free thru the mail:

To me, Bob will forever be remembered as the last player not required to wear a batting helmet at the plate.

Dan,

When you sent the card to Bob, did you tell him about your project? What about the other players you have signed? Any reactions from the players?

It's a neat project, and I would hope they would find it fun as well!!!

Bob was the first player I had gotten thru the mail, but you bet I described the project in my letter. No response, just the card. I got Tiant in person and he seemed mildly interested. My other 8 autos were all via private signing.

Already showed the Beniquez, but cracked out the PSA 9 and got it signed:

Danny Cater rarely signs because of his arthritis. I know because I get about one card signed every three months or so from him. And that's about all he really can or wants to do. And I know this because his son-in-law is a friend of mine and we all live in the same suburban city.

Wanted to post this scan here too, to keep the thread up to date.

Got this HOF auto back TTM on Saturday. I love the big, bold sig. PSA 8 crackout.

Went to the card show in Mansfield, MA, this past Sunday, where I got this signed:

Drago is the 14th signed card I have for this set. And then Monday, I got a batch back from PSA/DNA, which included this:

2 months without an update! I'm still waiting on a good price, to get my Fisk, Beniquez, Guerrero and Drago cards graded and authenticated. In the meantime, I picked this one up cheap:
