When they were being sold, you could order a picture of any active player, thus, the theoretical checklist is every major leaguer from 1902-11. HOFers are much easier to find than commons in this set and many cards that listed in the SCD big book and other checklists are unverified since most of checklists were created from the ads that listed all active players at the time.

I agree, generally HOFers are easier to find than commons, but...

I have been looking for a Cobb and Burkett for a long time and have not been able to add either to my collection.

Default W600 Sporting Life Set List?

Hello Richard:

In the old Vintage & Classic Baseball Collector Magazine, Jerry Spillman ran the following ad:

A new complete comprehensive checklist for the W600 Sporting Life Cabinet cards is available. Every player that appeared on a card in this issue, the team he played for, the year the card was first offered and the years played for the team. The program has many variations. The PC computer program is a stand alone executable file that is menu driven. That is, there is no setup or installation requirements. The 3-1/2" floppy disk is $5.00 postpaid. Jerry Spillman, 50 Verbena Avenue, Floral Park, NY 11001.

If my memory is correct, Jerry has visited the Forum in the past. Perhaps another member may be able to forward his email address to you.

Hope this helps!

Patrick

but rather a diskette. The program, which I still have and use occasionally, runs in DOS. Also, none of the lists can be printed. I was thinking about hiring a monk to transcribe it, but it turned out to be easier just to keep the disk.

Does Mr. Spillman have an update?

Cheer up, Tom. You can visit them anytime.
Does anyone know why the Cobb is tough?

but I do think you should just randomly send about $50K more since they've gone up so much!

On the Cobb.....no ideas. One was sold in Mastronet or REA or someone in last 3 years and at the time it went for $8-$10K or so in VG to VG- condition. Based on how they were ordered, there's no explanation for a Cobb shortage. Kinda like Old Judge Cabinet Anson's, there should be quite a few of them around.

The SCD Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards has a complete updated checklist of the SLC cards.

1907 was the year of Cobb's first card and was the year production of the SLC cards dropped dramatically after a strong five year run. Although production continued demand for the cards must have diminished significantly.

Is their checklist of known cards, or possible cards? This is just about the only set where the checklist contains theoreitical cards and just cards that are known to exist. If they do have the theoretical cards, then why not put Cobb and Matty in the e104-3 checklist? The set is made up of moslty Phillies, Tigers and Giants, so they should exist.

Jay,

The SLC card checklist is a list of all the cards that were offered to readers of the Sporting Life newspaper during the period 1902 to 1912.

I can't seem to grasp the interest in these W600's, they are not even considered baseball cards by many of the board.

Would it be a good guess that 25-33% of that checklist is actually unverified? If the percentage was higher, it wouldn't surprise me.

You're right Leon. When Sporting Life originally advertised them they were called cabinet-size phototypes.

It may not be accurate but it is convenient and generally accepted to call them baseball cards.

Even the term baseball card is not accurate. It is not a card made out of a baseball. They are pictures of baseball players on cards.

Good guess Jay - it is almost 50%.
