Default '65 Classic Cards of '09-11 Players

Posted By: Glen V

A year or two ago I remember an Ebay auction of an "authentic" '09-11 poster. Just found a similar poster with an interesting description. Has anyone seen individual '65 Classic Cards with printing on the backs? They aren't in the SCD.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=5116385037&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT

Don't remember if I bid on the first poster or not, but remember it went for a lot more money than it should have if it really is from '65. Does anyone know of any other newer collector cards that could be taken for something much older?

Frank Ward has this same sheet on his website - http://members.aol.com/fkwcenturyold/1909W-Unc.html. Not sure where the seller gets the 1965 date from, although he seems pretty confident in his description.

This sheet along with a few others I will be auctioning came directly from one of the individuals who issued the set almost 40 years ago.

D'oh! I wonder what the asking price is for the "P.O.R." sheet.

I saw this Ebay auction as well. This auction raises a great question, what is the legitimate age of the item? It would be great to get the sellers point of view and historical knowledge on the sheet, as he stated quite clearly that he purchased the sheets straight from the original producer.

This wouldn't be the first time a card set was produced in the 1950's-1960's, and was assumed to be from an earlier time period. Many prints/reprints have fooled generations of collectors, one coming to mind is a rarely seen reproduction of 1933 Goudey cards, reportedly done in the 1960's. The cards were reportedly produced in the early 60's by a collector looking to replacate the exact look and feel of the original issue. One of the only tells to differenciate the two is the stock of cardboard used, which was a bit lighter in weight, weaker, and darker in color. Otherwise, the same dot-matrix style printing was used, as was the original coloring palette.

A repint or regular issue made during the 1960's or earlier, has had a great deal of time to age naturally, to make it look and feel like a vintage card. This can make it very difficult to place a production year on uncataloged issues featuring vintage players, especially if an issue was made to look vintage at the time, and were made using period machinery/techniques to produce the cards.

Glen, maybe try and ask the seller to post his comments. I'd be interested to hear what he has to say.

Mike Wheat made some rather snazzy replicas of T3s, with only a tiny, tiny flourish on the back to announce that they were reprints. I think they could easily fool someone unfamiliar with the set (but then, we're always telling people, "Don't buy a card for over $100 until you're familiar with the original set.") The coloring is not perfect--although it's good- and there's no attempt to duplicate the weired surface of a T3, but the figures and forms are VERY faithfully copied. If you'd like a scan of my reprint of "Chief Myers at Bat," e-mail me. If you're not into collecting T3s, or if you already have saeveral real ones, forget it.
