Default Don Hutson Items… During NFL playing days?

When the hobby accepted rookie card of someone who played in the NFL from 35-45 is a 1955 issue, it gives you the feeling there aren’t a lot of items out there, but the board is always full of surprises for me, so I thought its worth asking:

Is there an item that depicts Hutson as a Packer which was issued during his playing days?

My research shows a Wheaties panel that has him as an Alabama AA, but no Packers Walkers Cleaners, Diamond Matchbook, Chicle, etc.

Thanks!

Hi John. Unfortunately for Hudson he fell in the card pit that was the great depression / WWII era when there's just not a lot of items.

Your best bet if you want something that shows him in his Packers uniform is to snag a vintage photo from that era. I don't have a lot of Hudson ones but here is one with Lambeau and Irv Comp.

There was a really nice action photo of him in the most recent RMY Auction as well.

Thanks Jeff. Makes sense, I figured that was a rough time period for cards. Nice photo!

The Packer programs from that era still featured yearbook like photos of the players -

Living in Connecticut, one of my favorite Hutson items is the program from a mid-season war time exhibition game the Packers played against a team from the Navy yards in Groton and New London - which had a number of NFL players stationed there. They had come East to play the Dodgers in Brooklyn on Nov 21, 1943, and were playing the Eagles-Steelers in Philadelphia on Dec. 5, so they fit this game in.

Awesome! Thanks Mike. And we even get the final score: 62-14. I love seeing stuff like this. The number of exhibition games the teams played in the first few decades seems to be quite a lot and you don't find them documented on sites like profootball reference because they weren't official.

On a somewhat related note - couldn't help but notice Swede Johnston from the Chicle set - always thought his inclusion in the Packer HOF was curious since he never seemed like one of their key players.

Great program, Mike! Love those images.

I know its not from his Packer days but to me the Wheaties AA Hudson is the best Hudson item out there.

Highly recommend that anyone who likes 30's football should work on the Wheaties master set. It is a lot of fun to put together!

I like this Hudson action photo. Eyes on the ball and a fingertip catch with NO GLOVES.
