Default August Pick ups

Well I did not see a thread for the month yet, so figured I would start one. Hard to believe no one got anything at the national to post.

My newest autos are for my Sport Magazine run. Posted here https://flic.kr/s/aHsm2aCX3d for anyone interested.

Jan 1965

Jan 1962

December 1949 I already had one signed by Lujack, but got this one signed by Luckman and Lujack

Default National p/u

I'd been watching this one on ebay for a month, but wanted to see it in person in Cleveland before buying. I'm going to cross it over to PSA for my HOF set.

splurged on an ungraded 1953 topps complete set.

will probably send in for PSA grading.

Getting this was always a dream. I remember when I was a kid getting an archive reprint of the 1953 Willie Mays card...and thinking to myself maybe one day I could get the real thing.

This was fun:

I bought some junk wax including a box of 2013 Panini Golden Age, just to rip some stuff (every so often you have to rip wax, you know?). Anyhow, I pulled a redemption card for this card and figured WTF, so I entered it into the Panini redemption program and the system accepted the code. Apparently, Panini will honor old redemptions. Took about four months but the card arrived last week. It retails for about $180, so not bad on a $14 junk wax box. Also yielded this in the box:

Default Mantle Autographed Baseball

Although I think I may have posted my below Mickey Mantle autographed baseball before, I recently had it authenticated by BAS (Beckett).

I have to admit, the encapsulation is a very attractive presentation by BAS.

James Brendan Connolly won a gold medal in the hop, step and jump, now triple jump, at the first modern Olympic Games in Athens, Greece in 1896. Just prior to the games he was a student at Harvard. They declined to give him a leave of absence to compete. He dropped out and travelled at his own expense. He would fight in Cuba in the Spanish American War which he reported on for the Boston Globe. He contributed to several magazines, including Colliers Weekly. He would author 200 short stories and 25 novels. Most of his novel were maritime related. In 1949 Harvard offered him an honorary doctorate which he refused.

This is a presentation copy of the book 'Jim Connolly and the Fisherman of Gloucester an Appreciation of James Brendan Connolly at Eighty'. It comes in a slip case with an interior folding slip cover. It is inscribed by the author and signed by Connolly below that. He usually signed "James B. Connolly', this is the first time I have seen a full name signature of him.

Thank you. I am from Waltham. Also lived in Walpole, a short hop from Richie Hebner, and Worcester. Very good friend is a retired Springfield police officer as is his wife.

7.5 x 10.5" SGC 1955-ish Mantle display. I love this display - really glad they encased the entire piece:

Thanks Chris. I normally don't touch cuts, but this really appealed to me. I also picked up a 1956-ish that didn't quite make the cut <=== not proud of what I did there.

In honor of your Stan Lee score, today in 1939 Marvel issued its first issue. I wonder if Stan bought a copy as a child?

Seeing what Runscott did gave me an idea. I have a '67 Mantle pin-up and an early 50's Mantle auto on a notecard that I think would look great done the same way. Thanks, Scott!

Thanks for all the praise, guys, but I acquired it already-created. Apparently the previous owner made the display piece and then SGC encapsulated the entire thing. But I think it was a great idea, especially for a small, sideways cut. I would never have thought of it.
