Help ID'ing and Valuing This Babe Ruth Photo
i have this Babe Ruth photo, and i am trying to pin point an age. As you can see, the image is dark, but the strange part and the part i need help on is that when i hold the photo at an angle it turns "shiney and dark". It has the look of a negative when it is tiled. I know it is not a negative of corse, but the picture change at the angle has me puzzled.
what type of photos were out there in the 20's and early 30's? also, what era is the picture? i am not talkiong about the age of the photo, but the era when the original picture would have been taken.. i was able to find out that the "negative" effect i was talking about is called "silvering" and that is a good sign of age. if this is an original type 1 photo what would be a ballpark value? all help is greatly appreciated g~~60_12.JPG)

It is the photograph from the controversial 1930 Goudey Babe Ruth calendar card. I don't know if that helps much in dating the photograph.

Dan,
i recently got it on ebay. it had a bad title and i took a shot. It was not sold by a sports person.. when i got it, the thing that stood out to me was the intense "silvering". I researched cycleback.com last night and found out it is a good sign of age. The photo looks like the scan as long as you look at it straight on. When you tilt the photo it gets the silvering and it looks like a negative. Last edited by bcookie; 08-29-2011 at 03:13 PM.

The lack of details is what is troubling with this photo. Nothing in it appears in focus. The face, hands and folds of his uniform all appear blotchy. This to me screams repro or reprint or some sort of second or third generation photo.

I don't think that photo is worth very much at all... as in less than $5. I'm in line with Dan Mc on this one. Maybe someone else has a higher opinion of it. Sorry. Wish you well with it.

Thompson Photo
The image is a Thompson Photo circa 1921
There are two original type 1 photos known of this image. Interesting both have "Babe" en route to the plate "Batter Up" written on the Reverse in Thompson's hand The example shown here is a cropped example 2nd generation that was made to look old.

Photo Experts
I know there are a lot of photo experts and i am sure they have already replied to this post.
i am looking for education on photos.. i get that this photo may not be a type 1 because there is an original photo out there that just sold in a recent auction for $5000. This photo has "silvering" is that feature of a photo able to be faked?
