Is this card really rare enough for this price?!

This auction has ended, so I'm not outing anything here. Someone please help me understand why this card went for so much. I have a blank backed Seigle that I never thought was a tough card.

it does not seem to be that rare (PSA has graded 10 of them). That said, the last PSA 4 went for nearly double what this SGC 40 went for. Not sure if it is the horizontal pose that drives its popularity...?

The American Caramel E90-1 card of Johnny Siegle is not as plentiful as other E90-1s. The card incorrectly spells his name Seigle.

Siegle was from Ohio, a right-handed outfielder, he played part of 2 seasons for the Cincinnati Reds, appearing in 17 games at the end of the 1905 season, and in only 22 games in 1906.

There aren't many card sets that had a depiction of Siegle.

Volume 2 of Mr. Lipset's wonderful Encyclopedia has a listing of E90-1s, setting out some that are 'extremely rare', 'rare', 'very difficult', and 'difficult'. Mr. Lipset has Siegle's card in the 'very difficult' catagory. Some price guides don't reflect that positioning. The Standard Catalog does give the Siegle card a very slight price boost above the common cards, but in my estimation it is not quite as much of a differential as it should be.

Mr. Lipset published this 2nd volume in 1984. In recent years I've had a handful of wise, experienced collectors share with me their belief as to the difficulty of some of the E90-1s, and with that information I think Mr. Lipset's catagories are close to correct, but that a few of the cards should be moved a bit. I think the Siegle card would remain 'very difficult'.

So while I think the price is high, it isn't outrageous. I suspect it was bought by someone attempting to assemble an SGC set. It's a nice card.

Collectors of E90-1s would benefit from having Mr. Lipset's encyclopedia. Information is power.

Hi Frank

I found out how tough Seigle was by accident.... I had picked one up 25 years ago in a small collection, and placed it on EBAY at .99 and it sold for $250-300. The card was GD at best, but the buyer needed it to complete his set. The funny part is, had someone on the board posted that they needed that one card to finish the set, I would have happily given it to them.
Ignorance is bliss.... sometimes, but only rarely.

The Seigle card from the E90-1 set is every bit as tough as Frank mentions.
It is a low populated card from the set and only a few have popped up for sale
in the last year or so. FYI, the Psa-4 that's mentioned that went for double
this card was in an early 07 Mile High auction. I think that price is actually
low and not accurate. If you remember this was the auction that was selling the
entire set and had the format of final set price -vs- final individual price.
Whichever ended higher this was the way it was to be sold. The set price ended
so much higher collectors stopped bidding on the individual cards which left an
inaccurate final price on all the individual cards in that auction, this being
one of them.

i certainly don't search for the card, but when I do come across it I keep it in my watchlist cuz I think its an attractive card. But it always ends way out of my price range for a low grade e90 so I usually pass.

I always assumed his card was tough because he was pulled from the set after they realized he wasnt the Reds RF for the last 3+ years and late in the printing they replaced him with the actual Reds RF since 1907 who is Mike Mitchell and of course,and extremely tough e90 card

I don't know about the other E92 sets but I can vouch for the fact that the Seigle is one of the toughest commons in the E92 Crofts Cocoa set as well.

Thanks for the help guys. I knew you would have an explanation.

My blank backed Seigle has the same font and lettering in the caption, but Pete Calderon told me years ago that the blank back means it would be considered an E92. Would the blank back dramatically affect the value?

I have an E92 Dockman Seigle (SGC 30) and last I remember on the SGC pop reports, there were about 18 that had been graded, which is mid-range for that set.
